Question No. 37 to 39 are case-based/data -based questions with 2 to 3 short sub-

37 Refining is the process of purification of metals. One of the important methods of refining 4
is electrolysis. In electrolysis, electrical energy is used to bring about a non-spontaneous
redox reaction. This is done by passing an electric current through a liquid containing ions,
known as an electrolyte. In contrast to metals, the current in electrolytes is carried by the
movement of ions rather than the movement of electrons. The solid conductors inserted
into the liquid are called electrodes, the one with a positive charge is called the anode
(because it attracts anions) and the one with the negative charge is called the cathode. A
diagrammatic representation of electrolysis of copper is shown below :
(i) How is copper obtained from its sulphide ore? Give equations of the reactions.
(ii)Name the electrolyte used in refining copper.

38. In humans, sex determination is the process that determines the biological sex of an 4
offspring and, as a result, the sexual characteristics that they will develop. A child's
biological sex (male or female) is determined by the chromosome that the male parent
contributes. Males have XY sex chromosomes while females have XX sex chromosomes;
the male can contribute the X or Y chromosome, while the female must contribute one of
their X chromosomes. Parents terminate the pregnancy after knowing the sex of their
unborn child, usually a daughter. This is illegal and unethical to carry out prenatal sex
determination for aborting female foetus

a- 46, b- 44, c- 92, d- No autosomes are present in humans
iv- Who is mainly responsible for the sex of the male child-
a- Father, b- mother, c- both parents, d- none of these
39. Read the following and answer the following questions from (i) to (iv). 4
A concave lens is thick at the edges and thin at the centre, while a convex lens is thick at
the centre and thin at the edges. We can distinguish between a concave lens and a convex
lens without touching them. For this keep a book close to a lens and observe the image of
the text of the book through the lens. If the letters appear enlarged, then it is a convex
lens and if the letters appear diminished then it is a concave lens.
Convex lens converges light rays and hence known as converging lens. Similarly,
concave lens diverges light rays and is known as diverging lens. Linear magnification
produced by a lens is equal to the ratio of the image distance to the object distance.
Power of a lens is defined as the reciprocal of its focal length.
(i) What type of image is always made by a concave lens ?
(ii) If magnification produced by a spherical lens is +0.75, then what is the nature of the
lens ?
(iii) What is the power of a convex lens with focal length 80 cm ?
(iv)Draw a ray diagram to show the path of the light ray when the object is placed
