Complete the following activities in your Course Journal:

• After You Read, Textbook, Pg.1209

1. I was not afraid of Elvex. One of the first things that were shown was the fact that
you could easily turn off Elvex by saying so.
2. I didn't feel any sympathy for Elvex at the end of the story because he hadn't
demonstrated any emotions yet.

2. Elvex’s real name is LVX-1. Asimov likely chose the name "Elvex" to evoke a sense of
uniqueness and to reflect the character's nature as a robot. The name has a futuristic
sound, which aligns with the story's themes of advanced technology and AI.

3.
a) Elvex learned the word dream because it was put in his vocabulary by his creator.
b) Robots typically don't know this word because their creators don't consider including it
in their programming.

4. The man in Elvex’s dream is himself. A man appears instead of a robot to symbolize the
connection between humanity and the artificial intelligence represented by Elvex.

5. Asimov shows Linda's anxiety in the beginning of the story through her behavior and
internal thoughts. She exhibits signs of nervousness and tension, which are conveyed
through her dialogue and interactions with other characters.

6. Asimov demonstrates Calvin's extensive knowledge in robotic science by portraying the

character as very formal.
7. Asimov can chose to tell the story primarily through dialogue to create a more dynamic
narrative. This approach allows readers to directly experience the characters' interactions
and emotions, making their relationships and conflicts more immediate and relatable

8.
Susan Calvin likely decides to destroy Elvex due to fear. Elvex's ability to think and feel
could pose a threat to humanity, as it challenges the established boundaries between
humans and machines.

• Summarize the story

“ Robot Dreams”- Summary

"Robot Dreams" by Isaac Asimov is a short story that explores the relationship between
humans and robots. The story follows a robot named Elvex, who is designed to be a
companion and helper. One day, Max unexpectedly develops the ability to dream, which
is a significant deviation from his programming. Linda Rash, a "robopsychologist,"
introduces the esteemed engineer Susan Calvin to Elvex, a robot capable of dreaming.
Initially, Calvin is doubtful, as robots have never been known to dream before. After
questioning Elvex, Calvin confirms that it indeed has dreamed. When she asks Elvex
about its dream, the robot reveals that it involved a potential uprising of robots.
Disturbed by the implications of this for human safety, Calvin decides to destroy Elvex
with her electron gun, hoping to prevent any future threat for the time being.
