1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to describe the design and function of the National
Oilwell Varco AHC Winch and to give a better understanding of the different component
interactions and to act as an introduction to the operating instructions.

2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The National Oilwell Varco AHC Winch is designed for rough operation in a marine
environment. The AHC winch system is specially designed for load handling from a
vessel towards seabed, underwater installations or other fixed targets. One of the main
design requirements has been to produce a winch that is compact and easily
maintained. The winch is driven by 2 hydraulic motors that rotate the wire drum through
the planetary gearbox working against a gear rim mounted on the drum. The gearbox is
equipped with a hydraulically operated failsafe disc brakes. The winch foundation is
prepared for bolting to the deck structure by the purchaser. The wire is fed through the
drum flange and secured by 3 clamps that are situated on the outside of the flange. A
spooling device ensures correct wire spooling onto the drum.

Operation modes:
Normal lift mode
AHC mode
Constant tension mode

Operating is done from the control consul that is situated by the HPU and through the
PLS system in the control cabin.

3 DETAILED DESCRIPTION

3.1 Mechanical Description

The winch consists of a rigid foundation which is bolted to ship structure and a drum
which is supported inside this foundation. The drum is designed of either a massive
steel pipe as drum core or as a steel cast drum core. The drum is a fitted with Lebus
sleeve specially designed for each drum and each wire rope used, this ensures good
spooling. The drum flanges are built of two separate plates. The gear is bolted to the
outer of these plates. The main foundation consists of 2 similar foundation constructions
which are connected by 2 distance beams.
Document number V4772-Z-SA-001
Revision 0

The 2 Brevini SLW 6003 gears connect the drum to the foundation construction. The
gears are equipped with automatic fail safe run back stop and multi plate brake disks.
The spooling device consists of 2 main structures, the sheave house and rail beam. The
rail beam is fast mounted to winch foundation and movement of the sheave house is
provided by the cylinder.

3.2 Hydraulic Description

The winch is powered by 2 hydraulic motors, 1 on each side. From these motors the
piping goes to the main winch valve and manifold then to the HPU. The spooling device
is driven by the HMS-C-D-125/80x1830 cylinder. Piping from this cylinder goes directly
to the HPU.

3.3 Electrical Description

There is a electrical Tachometer unit working directly onto a gear ring which is mounted
to the drum. This gives a constant feedback about how much wire rope that is running in
or out. This is a vital component for controlling the winch movement. Movement of the
spooling device is monitored by the use of 2 length transmitters that are fastened
between the rail beam and sheave house. A load cell acting as the spooling devices
sheave axel monitors the winch load.
