"Applying New Data Calculations to Your Visualizations, Formatting Visualizations,

Formatting Tools and Menus, Formatting Specific Parts of the View"

Objective:

To learn how to apply new data calculations to your visualizations, format visualizations, use the
formatting tools and menus, and format specific parts of the view.

Materials:

● Tableau Software
● Example dataset (such as the Sample Superstore dataset)

Procedure:

Applying New Data Calculations to Your Visualizations

Once you have created a new data calculation, you can apply it to your visualizations. To do
this, simply drag and drop the calculation from the Data pane to the Rows, Columns, Marks, or
Color shelves.

Example:

To create a bar chart that shows the profit margin for each product category, you would drag and
drop the following calculation to the Rows shelf:

([Sales] - [Cost of Goods Sold]) / [Sales]

This will create a bar chart that shows the profit margin for each product category, with the
highest profit margins at the top and the lowest profit margins at the bottom.

Formatting Visualizations

Tableau offers a variety of formatting options for your visualizations, such as colors, fonts,
labels, and other aspects of your visualizations to make them more visually appealing and
informative.

To format a visualization, select the visualization and then click the Format button in the toolbar.
This will open the Format pane, where you can change the formatting options for your
visualization.
Example:

To change the color of the bars in the profit margin bar chart, follow these steps:

1. Select the bar chart.

2. Click the Format button in the toolbar.
3. In the Marks section of the Format pane, click the Color button.
4. Select a new color from the color palette.
5. Click the OK button to apply the formatting change.

Formatting Tools and Menus

The Formatting pane is divided into a number of different sections, each of which contains
formatting options for a different aspect of your visualization.

The following table provides an overview of the formatting tools and menus in Tableau:

Formatting Specific Parts of the View

You can also format specific parts of your visualization, such as individual marks, axes, and
titles. To do this, right-click on the part of the view that you want to format and select Format.
This will open the Format pane for that part of the view.

Example:

To change the font size of the title of the profit margin bar chart, follow these steps:

1. Right-click on the title of the bar chart.

2. Select Format.
3. In the Text section of the Format pane, change the font size to 16 points.
