Algebraic Expression
Any mathematical expression which consists of numbers, variables and
operations are called Algebraic Expression.
Number Line and an Expression
An expression can be represented on the number line.
Example
How to represent x + 5 and x – 5 on the number line?
Solution:
First, mark the distance x and then x + 5 will be 5 unit to the right of x.
Monomials, Binomials and Polynomials
Like and Unlike Terms
Terms having the same
variable are called Like Terms.
Examples of Like Terms

● 2x and -9x
● 24xy and 5yx
● 6x2 and 12x2
The terms having different
variable are called, Unlike Terms.
Examples of Unlike Terms

● 2x and - 9y
● 24xy and 5pq
● 6x2 and 12y2
Addition and Subtraction of Algebraic Expressions
Steps to add or Subtract Algebraic Expression

● First of all, we have to write the algebraic expressions in different rows in such a
way that the like terms come in the same column.
● Add them as we add other numbers.
● If any term of the same variable is not there in another expression then write is
as it is in the solution.
Example
Add 15p2 – 4p + 5 and 9p – 11
Solution:
Write down the expressions in separate rows
with like terms in the same column and add.
Example
Subtract 5a2 – 4b2 + 6b – 3 from 7a2 – 4ab + 8b2 + 5a – 3b.
Solution:
For subtraction also write the expressions in different rows. But to subtract we have to
change their signs from negative to positive and vice versa.

7a2 - 4ab + 8b2 + 5a - 3b

coefficients for each of the
following expressions:
A. 7x²yz – 5xy
B. x² + x + 1
(i) 7x²yz – 5xy
The given equation has two terms that are:
7x²yz and – 5xy
The coefficient of 7x²yz is 7
The coefficient of – 5xy is – 5
(ii) x² + x + 1
The given equation has three terms that
are:

The coefficient of x² is 1
The coefficient of x is 1
The coefficient of 1 is 1
Given expression is : p2q+pq2

∴ It is Binomial
xy + yz + zt + tx is
Solution:
xy + yz + zt + tx
The given expression contains four
terms
∴ It comes in none of these category
What is an identity?
An identity equation is an
equation that is always true
for any value substituted into
the variable.
Identity I:

(2x + 3y) 2
(2x + 3y) 2 = (2x) 2 + 2(2x) (3y) + (3y) 2
[Using the Identity (I)]
= 4x 2 + 12xy + 9y 2
Identity II:

(4p – 3q) 2
(4p – 3q) 2=(4p) 2 – 2 (4p) (3q) + (3q) 2
[Using the Identity (II)]
= 16p 2 – 24pq + 9q 2
Identity III:

194 × 206
= (200 – 6) × (200 + 6)
= 2002 – 62
= 40000 – 36
= 39964
Identity IV:

501 × 502
= (500 + 1) × (500 + 2)
= 5002 + (1 + 2) × 500 + 1 × 2
= 250000 + 1500 + 2
= 251502
Add 2/3a, 3/5a, -6/5a
Solution:
Let us add the given expression
2/3a + 3/5a + (-6/5a)
2/3a + 3/5a – 6/5a
Let us take LCM for 3 and 5 which is
15
(2×5)/(3×5)a + (3×3)/(5×3)a –
(6×3)/(5×3)a
10/15a + 9/15a – 18/15a
(10a+9a-18a)/15
= a/15
Solve using identity : 2312 – 1312
Solve using identity : 2312 – 1312
Solve using identity : 97 x 103
Solve using identity : 97 x 103
Is (11pq + 4q)2 – (11pq – 4q)2 = 176pq2
Is (11pq + 4q)2 – (11pq – 4q)2 = 176pq2

LHS = (11pq + 4q)2 – (11pq – 4q)2

= (11pq + 4q + 11pq – 4q) × (11pq + 4q – 11pq + 4q)
[using a2 -b2 = (a – b) (a + b),
here a = 11pq + 4q and b = 11 pq – 4q]
= (22pq) (8q)
= 176 pq2
Find the value of x, if 10000x = (9982)2 – (18)2
Find the value of x, if 10000x = (9982)2 – (18)2

RHS = (9982)2 – (18)2

= (9982 + 18)(9982 – 18)
[Since a2 -b2 = (a + b) (a – b)]
= (10000) × (9964)
LHS = (10000) × x
Comparing L.H.S. and RHS, we get
10000x = 10000 × 9964
x = 9964
Subtract 2x3 – 4x2 + 3x + 5 from 4x3 + x2 + x + 6
Solution:
2x3 – 4x2 + 3x + 5 from 4x3 + x2 + x + 6
Let us subtract the given expression
(4x3 + x2 + x + 6) – (2x3 – 4x2 + 3x + 5)
4x3 + x2 + x + 6 – 2x3 + 4x2 – 3x – 5
=2x3 + 5x2 – 2x + 1
Subtract ab/7 -35/3bc + 6/5ac from 3/5bc – 4/5ac
Solution:
ab/7 -35/3bc + 6/5ac from 3/5bc –
4/5ac
Let us subtract the given expression
3/5bc – 4/5ac – (ab/7 – 35/3bc + 6/5ac)
Upon rearranging
3/5bc + 35/3bc – 4/5ac – 6/5ac – ab/7
By grouping similar expressions we get,
LCM for (5 and 3 is 15), (5 and 5 is 5)
(9bc+175bc)/15 + (-4ac-6ac)/5 – ab/7
184bc/15 + -10ac/5 – ab/7
– ab/7 + 184bc/15 – 2ac
Add the following algebraic
expressions:

a – b + ab, b – c + bc, c – a + ac
(a – b + ab) + (b – c + bc) + (c – a + ac)
= a – b + ab + b – c + bc + c – a + ac
= a – a +b – b +c – c + ab + bc + ca
= 0 + 0 + 0 + ab + bc + ca
= ab + bc + ca
Find the product -3y (xy+y²) and
evaluate its value for x = 4 and y
=5
Let us simplify the given expression
-3y (xy+y²)
(-3y × xy) + (-3y × y²)
-3xy² – 3y³
Now let us evaluate the expression
when x = 4 and y = 5
-3xy² – 3y³
-3 × (4) × (5)² – 3 × (5)3
-300 – 375
-675
Simplify:
(i) x² (x + 2y) (x – 3y)
(i) Now let us simplify the given
expression
x² (x + 2y) (x – 3y)
x² (x² – 3xy + 2xy – 3y²)
x² (x² – xy – 6y²)
x^4 – x³y – 6x²y²
Using the formula for squaring a
binomial
(1001)²
We can express 1001 as 1000 + 1
So, (1001)² = (1000 + 1)²
Upon simplification we get,
(1000 + 1)² = (1000)² + 2 (1000) (1) +

= 1000000 + 2000 + 1
= 1002001
Simplify: x^2 – 3x + 5 – 1/2(3x^2 – 5x + 7)
Solution:
x2 – 3x + 5 – 1/2(3x2 – 5x + 7)
Upon rearranging
x2 – 3/2x2 – 3x + 5/2x + 5 – 7/2
By grouping similar expressions
we get,
LCM for (1 and 2 is 2)
(2x2 – 3x2)/2 – (6x + 5x)/2 + (10-
7)/2
= -1/2x2 – 1/2x + 3/2
