MYP Sciences –
Determining the value of ‘g’ at Mean Sea Level (MSL)
When a body is fallen towards the earth it experiences a change in its acceleration
due to the earth’s gravitational force. This acceleration is called acceleration due to
gravity. This is the acceleration that is attained by an object due to the gravitational
force.

The SI unit of acceleration due to gravity (g) is m/s².

Factors affecting acceleration due to gravity

The Shape of Earth: As it is known that the shape of the earth is not spherical it’s
quite oval so the gravitational force is different at different places. The force of
attraction is maximum at the pole of the earth approximately 9.82 m/s 2 as the
radius of the earth is minimum at the pole. While the force of gravitation is
minimum at the equator of the earth approximately 9.78 m/s 2 as the radius of the
earth is maximum at the equator.

Altitude: When a body moves away from the surface of the earth the force of
attraction decreases as the distance between the earth and the body increases.

Depth: When a body is put inside the earth’s surface the acceleration due to
gravity becomes less.

Look at the materials given to you. Choose the correct materials to perform the
experiment.

1. Outline the aim of your experiment.

2. In your method, identify the independent variable and dependent variable.
3. State what other variables could affect the results, but which you will
control by keeping the same.
4. Predict what you think will happen in your experiment, and explain why
you think this with scientific reasoning.
5. Now carry out your experiment.
6. Organize your results in a table. Make sure your table has headings that
clearly show the variables you used, and any units of measurement.
7. When you have gathered all your result, write a conclusion to explain your
results.
8. Evaluate your experiment for validity and suggest any improvements you
could have made.
