MYP 4 Class Lab Report - Finding 'G'
MYP 4 Class Lab Report - Finding 'G'
Task Overview
What do you have to do?
Students should be able to:
i. outline an appropriate problem or research question to be tested
by a scientific investigation
ii. outline a testable prediction using scientific reasoning
iii. outline how to manipulate the variables, and outline how data will
be collected
iv. Design scientific investigations.
v. present collected and transformed data
vi. interpret data and outline results using scientific reasoning
vii. discuss the validity of a prediction based on the outcome of the
scientific investigation
viii. discuss the validity of the method
ix. Describe improvements or extensions to the method.
How will you be assessed? A rubric will be used to assess the quality of work

Determining the value of ‘g’ at Mean Sea Level (MSL)
When a body is fallen towards the earth it experiences a change in its acceleration
due to the earth’s gravitational force. This acceleration is called acceleration due to
gravity. This is the acceleration that is attained by an object due to the gravitational
force.
The Shape of Earth: As it is known that the shape of the earth is not spherical it’s
quite oval so the gravitational force is different at different places. The force of
attraction is maximum at the pole of the earth approximately 9.82 m/s 2 as the
radius of the earth is minimum at the pole. While the force of gravitation is
minimum at the equator of the earth approximately 9.78 m/s 2 as the radius of the
earth is maximum at the equator.
Altitude: When a body moves away from the surface of the earth the force of
attraction decreases as the distance between the earth and the body increases.
Depth: When a body is put inside the earth’s surface the acceleration due to
gravity becomes less.
Look at the materials given to you. Choose the correct materials to perform the
experiment.
