Task 1:

Before working on this task 1, please read the following reading:

Yoshiwara, K. (2023). Trigonometry. American Institute of Mathematics.

Reading section 8.1 - Sum and Difference Formulas will help you understand the concepts

more clearly.

Answer the following questions for the given triangle.

i. Calculate tan 2θ

 Adjacent = 6,

 Opposite = 8,

 Hypotenuse = Unknown

 the tangent formula (Abramson, 2021):

8 4
tanΘ=opposite/adjacent tanΘ= =
6 3

 the double-angle formula for tangent (Abramson, 2021):

Assignment unit 7

2 tan Θ
tan(2Θ) = 2
1−tan Θ

 First, calculate tan2 Θ:

ii. Draw the graphs of tan 2θ and tan θ

iii. Calculate tan 4θ

Using this formula, we can derive tan(4θ):

(2¿Θ)
tan(4θ) =tan(2(2θ) =2 tan ¿
1−tan 2 (2Θ)

we need to calculate tan2 (2θ):

( )

Now:

iv. Calculate sin (A+B)

Given Information that:

 A=α (an angle in your triangle).

 B=90∘

Using these sides, you can calculate sin A and cos A:

sinA=Opposite/Hypotenuse

cosA=Adjacent/Hypotenuse

Using the Pythagorean theorem:

2 2
6 +8 =hypotenuse^2

36+64= hypotenuse^2

100= hypotenuse^2

Hypotenuse= √ 100 = 10

sinA=6/10=3/5

cosA=8/10=4/5

Values for B: Since B=90∘

Assignment unit 7

sinB=sin (90∘) =1

cosB=cos (90∘) =0

Calculate sin(A+B)

Now substitute these values into the sine addition formula:

sin(A+B) =sinA cosB+cosA sinB

sin(A+90∘) = ( 35 .0)+¿ ( 45 .1)

4
sin(A+B) =
5

v. Calculate cos (θ/2)

To calculate cos(θ/2) we will first need to find cosθ from the triangle and then use the

formula:

cos 2 ( θ2 ))= 1+ cos

θ

cosθ=6/10=3/5 now:

Task 2:

Answer the following questions related to the trigonometric equations:

(i) Factorize

3 x 2−12x+9=3( x 2−4x+3)
Assignment unit 7

The two numbers that multiply to give 3 (the constant term) and add up to -4 (the coefficient

of x) are -1 and -3.

So, we can rewrite x 2−4x+3 as:

(x−1) (x−3) so,

3( x 2−4x+3) =

3(x−1) (x−3)

(ii)Factorize

let x=sinθ will make it easier to factor. This substitution changes the original expression into:

3 x 2−12x+9=

3( x 2−4x+3) =

3(x−1) (x−3)

Replacing x with sinθ:

3(sinθ−1) (sinθ−3)

(iii)Solve the trigonometric equation

if

fautorize form.=

3(sinθ−1) (sinθ−3) =0

Now, we set each factor equal to zero:

sinθ−3=0 or sinθ−1=0
Assignment unit 7

sinθ−3=0 -> sinθ=3

sinθ−1=0 -> sinθ=1

The sine of any angle is always between -1 and 1 (Abramson, 2021). Therefore, sinθ=3 has

no solutions, since it's outside the range of sine.

 Solving sinθ−1=0 sinθ=1

2
Using the unit circle the sine function equals 1 at (Abramson, 2021): θ= +2nπ
π

Since we are interested in solutions in the interval [0,4π], we substitute different values of n

to find where sinθ=1.

π
For n=0: θ=
2

2 5π
For n=1: θ= +2π=
π 2

2 9π
For n=2: θ= +4π=
π 2

The interval [0,4π] means θ must be between 0 and 4π or 12.566 in decimal terms.

=¿ 4.5π ≈14.137 decimal terms thus, we discard this solution because it exceeds the
2

upper bound of the interval.

The values of θ in the interval [0,4π] that satisfy the equation are:

π 5π
θ= ,

Assignment unit 7

Task 3:

(i) Find cos A - cos B from the following triangle.

Using the sum-to-product formula for cosines, which is (Abramson, 2021):

cosα−cosβ=−2sin ( α +2 β )sin( α +2 β )
mentioned to substitute A=6θ and B=4θ,

cos6θ −cos4θ =−2sin ( 6 θ+2 4 θ )sin( 6 θ+2 4 θ )=

100 ∘
60 ∘+40 ∘ = ¿ ¿=50∘
2 2

60 ∘−40 ∘ 20 ∘
= =10∘
2 2

cos6θ −cos4θ =

−2sin( 50 ∘ )sin( 10 ∘ )

≈−0.2666
Assignment unit 7

(ii) Express sin A cos C into the sum of trigonometric functions using the following

triangle.

The product-to-sum formula (Abramson, 2021):

1
Sinα cosβ= [sin(α+β)+sin(α−β)]
2

Substitute sin A cos C:

1
Sinα cosC= [sin(α+C) +sin(α−C)]
2

1
sin60∘cos30∘= [sin(60∘+30∘) +sin(60∘−30∘)]
2

1
sin60∘cos30∘= [sin90∘ +sin30∘]
2

1
Trigonometric tables or known values (Abramson, 2021): sin90∘=1and sin30∘=
2

1 1 1 3
sin60∘cos30∘= [1 + ] = .
2 2 2 2

3
sin60∘cos30∘=

Assignment unit 7

Task 4:

Write in terms of the following double angled trigonometric expression:

Tip: Write sin2θ, cos2θ and tan2θ in terms of tanθ and

simplify.

The double-angle identities (Abramsom,2021):

2 tan(θ)
tan(2θ) =
1−tan2 (θ)

2
1−tan (θ)
cos(2θ) =
1+tan 2(θ)

2 tan(θ)
sin(2θ) =
1+ tan2 (θ)

2 tan(θ)
1−tan2 (θ)
2
1−tan (θ)
2
( 1−
2 tan(θ)
1+ tan2 (θ) ) =

1+ tan (θ)

tan(2 θ)
Simplify the term :
cos(2θ)

2 tan(θ) 1+tan 2(θ) 2

2 . 2 = 2 tan ( θ ) (1+ tan ( θ ))
1−tan (θ) 1−tan (θ) ¿¿

Now, simplify the term (1−sin2θ):

2 2
2 tan ( θ ) ( 1+ tan (θ))−2 tan (θ) (1−tan ( θ ) )
1− 2
= 2 can be factored= 2
1+ tan ( θ ) 1+ tan ( θ ) 1+ tan ( θ )
Assignment unit 7

Now we multiply the two expressions:

2
2 tan ( θ ) (1+ tan ( θ )) (1−tan ( θ ) )
2

2
¿¿ 1+ tan ( θ )

2
= 2 tan ( θ ) (1−tan ( θ ) )
¿¿

Knowing that: 1−tan2 (θ)❑=(1−tan(θ)) (1+tan(θ))

2
2 tan ( θ ) (1−tan ( θ ) )
¿¿

2 tan ( θ )
