MATH 1202 DISCUSSION FORUM UNIT 8 2

According to Abramson (2021), we can categorize systems of linear equations by number of

systems. First off, a system of equations can be considered consistent if it has at least one

solution. For example, consider the following equations:

x+y=5

2x + 2y = 10

This can be considered consistent since there is one solution (x=2, y=3).

Next, let’s look at inconsistent solutions. A solution can be considered inconsistent if it has no

solution, meaning that there is no set of values for the variables that will satisfy all of the

equations in the system. Usually, this occurs when two lines are parallel and thus have no

intersections. As an example, consider this system below:

3x + y = 2
MATH 1202 DISCUSSION FORUM UNIT 8 3

3x + y = 7

The system can be considered inconsistent since they have no points in common.

Third, let’s look at independent systems. A system can be considered independent if it has

exactly one solution pair. This occurs whenever there is a point where two lines intersect. For

example:

x+y=6

x-y=2
MATH 1202 DISCUSSION FORUM UNIT 8 4

The solution can be considered independent because there is exactly one solution (4, 2).

Finally, there are dependent systems. A system can be considered dependent if it has many

solutions. This often happens when the equations of the system are multiples of each other. An

example of this can be seen in the system below:

x+y=5

2x + 2y = 10
MATH 1202 DISCUSSION FORUM UNIT 8 5

This system is dependent since the solution to the first equation is also the same as the one in the

second equation, resulting in infinitely many solutions.
