SOLVING:AGE WORLD PROBLEM/MIXTURE PROBLEM AND

DISTANCE RATE AND TIME PROBLEMS

AGE WORLD PROBLEM
James is 4 times as old as Mary. 10 years from now James will be twice as old as Mary how old is James.

James Mary Equation

P J M J=4
F J+10 M+10 J+10=2(j+10)

4m+10=2(J+10)
4m+10=2J+20
- 2J -2J

J+10=20
-10 -10
J=10

P J=10 M=30
F M=10 M=40

Solution Process:

Let J represent James' current age and M represent Mary's current age.
From the given information, we can set up the following equations:

- Equation 1: J = 4M (James is 4 times as old as Mary)

- Equation 2: J + 10 = 2(M + 10) (In 10 years, James will be twice as old as Mary)

Substitute Equation 1 into Equation 2:

4M + 10 = 2(M + 10)
4M + 10 = 2M + 20
2M = 10
M=5

A, substitute the value of M back into Equation 1 to find J:

J= 4M
J=4*5
J = 40
Therefore, James' current age is 40.

Answer: 40
Mixture problems

55L of a 15% alcohol solution is mixed with 150L of a 40% alcohol solution what is the
concentration of the solution?

C1 V1 + C2 V2=C3 V3
(15%)(55L)+(40%)(150)=C3(205)
750+6,000= 205 C3

6,750=205 C3
205 205

32%=C3

V3=V1+V2=55+150=205

Solution Process:
Let's use the formula for mixing solutions: C_1V_1 + C_2V_2 = C_3V_3, where:

- C_1 = concentration of the first solution (15%)

- V_1 = volume of the first solution (55L)
- C_2 = concentration of the second solution (40%)
- V_2 = volume of the second solution (150L)
- C_3 = concentration of the mixture (what we need to find)
- V_3 = total volume of the mixture (V_1 + V_2 = 55L + 150L = 205L)

Substitute the values into the formula:

(0.15)(55) + (0.40)(150) = C_3(205)

8.25 + 60 = 205C_3

68.25 = 205C_3

C_3 = \frac{68.25}{205} \approx 0.3329

To express this as a percentage, multiply by 100:

C_3 \approx 32.%

Answer: The concentration of the mixture is approximately 32%

Distance, rate and time problems
Mark travel at an average speed of 25mpl gaing to work it takes him 2 hours to make the
return Trip home traveling at an average speed that in 15mph faster than this morning
commute how long does it take Mark to drive to work?

Home 25mph t=3.2hrs=t work

40mph T=2hrs 3.2 hrs=t

D=VT d=VT
D=40(2) 80 25
D=80M 25 25

Solution Process:

Let d be the distance from home to work.

Let v_1 be the speed in the morning (going to work) = 25 mph.
Let t_1 be the time taken in the morning (going to work).
Let v_2 be the speed in the evening (returning home) = v_1 + 15 = 25 + 15 = 40 mph.
Let t_2 be the time taken in the evening (returning home) = 2 hours.

The distance from home to work is the same in both directions. Therefore:

d = v_1 t_1 = v_2 t_2

25t_1 = 40(2)

25t_1 = 80

t_1 = \frac{80}{25} = \frac{16}{5} = 3.2 hours

Answer: The time it takes Mark to commute to work is \boxed{3.2} hours.
