ASSIGNMENT
SUB CODE: 3VLRG1 SUB. NAME: STRUCTURAL MECHNICS
Q.1. Draw SFD & BMD of cantilever beam as shown in figure-1 and locate points of
contra flexure if any.
FIG-1
Q.2. Draw SFD & BMD of simply supported beam as shown in figure-2 and locate points of
contra flexure if any.
FIG-2
Q.3.Determine the slope and deflection at point C in beam as shown in figure-3 by Conjugate
Beam method or Moment Area method.

Q.4. A cast iron beam is of T-section with top flange 100 x 20 mm (Horizontal) & web 20 x 80
mm (vertical). The beam is simply supported on a span of 8 m. The beam carries udl of 1.5
kN/m on entire span. Determine the maximum tensile stress and maximum compressive
stresses.
Q.5. A fixed beam of span 10 m carries uniformly distributed load of 20 kN/m over the left half
of the span as shown in figure-4. Analyse the beam and sketch the B.M. diagrams for the
beam.
FIG-4
Q.6. A continuous beam ABCD supported at A,B,C & D is loaded as shown in figure-5 .
Analyze this beam by Three Moment Equation and draw BMD.

Q.7 Find the Euler’s crushing load for a hollow cylindrical cast iron column, 20 cm external
diameter and 2.5 cm thick, if it is 6m long and hinged at both ends. E = 1.2*106 N/mm2.
Compare this load with the crushing load as given by the Rankine’s formula, taking σc=
550MPa and a =1/1600.
Q.8 Determine the section of a hollow C.I. cylindrical column 5 m long with ends firmly built in.
The column has to carry an axial compressive load of 588.6 KN. The internal diameter of
the column is 0.75 times the external diameter. Use Rankine’s formula.
Take a = 1 / 1600, fc = 57.58 KN/cm2 and F.O.S = 6.
Q.9. Determine the shear centre of channel section as shown in figure-6
FIG-6
Q.10. A beam of Tee section having flange of 100 mm x 20 mm (Horizontal)and web of 10mm x
150mm (Vertical) and 3 m long is simply supported at its ends. It carries 4 kN load at 30°
to vertical and passing through the centroid of the section. Calculate the maximum tensile
stresses and maximum compressive stresses. E = 200 kN/mm2.
