2 About TVT test system
TVT station is a variable intensity image projector that projects images of some standard targets into
direction of tested VIS–NIR camera. The tested camera generates copies of the projected images. Quality of
the images generated by the camera is evaluated and its important characteristics are measured. The TVT
station enables simulation of both ultra dark nights (moonless clouded nights) and ultra bright days (bright
sand desert at noon) and accurate testing performance of surveillance VIS–NIR cameras working at any
illumination conditions.
Testing surveillance VIS–NIR cameras with TVT test system generate a series of parameters that give
vital information about potential camera surveillance capabilities for camera users. In case of camera
designers tests using TVT system can deliver valuable information about methods to improve design of
tested VIS–NIR cameras.

3.1 CDT Collimator

Collimator CDT10100HR is an optical system used for

projection of image of reference targets from optical infinity
into direction of tested imagers. Focal length of the
CDT10100HR collimator is 1000mm. Collimator is equipped
with an aperture reduction. Aperture reduction can be easily
attached to collimator via integrated magnets. Active aperture
should be only just a bit larger than tested device optics to
limit stray light access.
Fig. 3. CDT collimator

3.1.1 Collimator apertures

When working in bright room make sure that you are using proper collimator adapter (aperture slightly
larger than tested optics) and there are no reflections that reach camera. The easiest way to ensure that, is to
place camera just behind adapter. If possible, check image with lights on and off to see if there is any
noticeable degradation of image when lights are on. The best targets for such checks are USAF and Edge
targets.

a) b)
Fig. 4. Comparison of target (a) with ambient light on and without collimator adapter and (b) with lights off.
Notice significant degradation of target. Interior of collimator became visible with ambient light on.

Collimator apertures are attached to the front wall by magnets. Simply choose aperture slightly larger then
tested optics and press it to the front opening.

3.2 CVT Collimator

Collimator CVT313 is an optical system used for projection of an image of

reference targets from optical infinity into direction of tested imager. Focal
length of the CVT313 collimator is 135mm.

3.3 LS-DAL light source
LS-DAL light source is a multi-channel calibrated light source
developed for realistic simulation of light conditions from dark,
moonless nights to ultra bright days at different geographical regions.
Design of this light source is optimized to use in systems for testing
VIS-NIR cameras used for long/medium range surveillance
applications. LS-DAL light source offers extremely high dynamic
range, continuous regulation of light intensity and fully computerized
design. User can regulate spectrum of emitted light in order to
simulate conditions at different surveillance scenarios caused by
different spectrum of light that illuminate scenery of interest and
different spectral reflectance of such scenery. Resistance of tested
VIS-NIR camera against UV light reflected from the scenery of Fig. 6. LS-DAL light source.
interest can also be checked.
3.3.1 Working modes
LS-DAL light source is fully operated with LS Control program. Source can work in six different modes:
1. halogen bulb of 2856K color temperature spectrum,
2. white broadband LED of color temperature over 5000K spectrum in visible range,
3. mixed mode when both halogen and white broadband LED are active at regulated ratio of
halogen/LED light intensity,
4. halogen bulb with spectral filters,
5. white broadband LED with spectral filters,
6. high intensity UV LED light mixed with halogen light or white LED light.
Switching of modes or work in mixed mode enables significant variations of spectrum of emitted light.
3.3.2 Light level regulation
Intensity of the halogen bulb is regulated using an opto-mechanical attenuator that changes light intensity but
does not change light color temperature. Intensity of the white LED source is regulated electronically using
advanced electronic regulation/stabilization system. Intensity of UV LED is not regulated. Regulation of
spectrum of emitted light is additionally supported by a set of spectral filters.
These advanced simulation capabilities make LS-DAL light source a unique solution on international
market.

Fig. 7. Exemplary spectrum of light emitted by LS-DAL light source working in three different modes: a)Halogen;
b)White broadband LED; c)Mixed mode.

6/24
3.3.3 Spectral filters
LS-DAL light source is equipped with filter pocket and filter selection slider. To set filter to active position.:
1. Remove filter covers from both sides of the light source.
2. Push or pull filter selector slider until desired filter is in active slot.

a) b)

3.4 MRW-8 rotary wheel

MRW-8 is special motorized wheel design to enable precision rotation of its 8

sockets for IR or visible targets. When fixed on CDT collimator, targets are
placed at its focal plane. MRW-8 can work with all standard radiation/light
sources including LS-DAL, DCB and MTB blackbodies.

After mounting test in MRW-8 wheel always put test cover back to prevent
dusting. Do not manually rotate wheel, when it is connected.
Active slot is opposite to test cover.

3.5 Targets
Targets used in typical measurements:
• Edge targets,
• USAF1951 targets,
• FOV targets,
• Greyscale targets
• Multi pinhole target.
3.5.1 Target mounting
Each target plate is mounted in adapter enabling fastening to the rotary wheel. All adapters have 4 mounting
holes that allows the target to be secured in horizontal or vertical position. Labels on the targets plates give
information about size of the bars, diameter of pinholes or contrasts of transmissive USAF targets.
Standard socket diameter for target mounting is 54 mm. Socket number 1, rectangular one, is designed for
larger targets. It can be converted to accept standard targets with conversion plate. Reflective side of
conversion plate should face towards the target.

a) b) c)
Fig. 11. Adapting slot number 1 for standard targets.

It is recommended that before replacing targets,

rotary wheel should be disconnected from radiation
source. In order to place new target in the rotary
wheel follow the steps below:
1. Remove the target cover.
2. Insert the targets into desired socket.

Fig. 12. MRW-8 rotary wheel with highlighted cover

Targets are equipped with magnets. They do not require screws to be fixed. Simply place target in
the socket and align it with screwholes in the wheel. Targets can be screwed ensure better position
repeatability. Please be careful not to drop these small screws inside the wheel. If it occurs please
remove the screw.
3. Put target cover back. This improves thermal stability of the targets and the blackbody.
3.5.2 Edge target
The edge target are typically used during MTF measurements. Edge of the target is manufactured with high
precision. Be careful as targets for different applications (thermal imagers, VIS cameras) may vary in length.
For IR targets, when mounted, edge of the target is slanted. VIS targets can be mounted with edge either
slanted or straight position. VIS targets are semitransparent.

3.5.3 USAF1951 targets

USAF1951 targets are commonly used during resolution measurements of VIS cameras. These are 3 – bar
patterns of 5:1 ratio. Patterns sizes follow geometric series. Next pattern is approximately 12% smaller than
previous one.

Fig. 14. USAF 1951 target

For ease of identifications patterns are grouped into 6 elements groups. Each group is 2 times smaller than
previous one. Group number is above patterns, element number is next to pattern.

a) b)
Fig. 15 a) USAF1951 target b) Group distribution: group 0 – red; 1 – green; 2- blues; 3- orange.

9/24
Spatial frequency of a patterns in angular units (lp/mrad) is a combination of focal length of the collimator
used and spatial frequency of the pattern in linear units (lp/mm). It is calculated as:
ν=ν '⋅f ' [lp/mrad] (2)
where:
ν’ - spatial frequency of a pattern [lp/mm]
f’ - collimator focal length in meters

20/24
8 Maintenance and service
In this chapter are described important recommendations that enable:
I. trouble free work of the test system,
II. extend the life time of the test system.
That information allows the user for trouble-free operation when using test system. Before using Inframet
equipment user should know all of these restrictions and know how to proceed if some situations will appear.
8.1 Electrical connection
1. Do not power test system using improper electrical power system. Voltage outside typical range
(230V±10%).
2. Mains power should be stable, if customer is not sure – uninterruptible power supply should be
provided.
3. Do not use improper grounding (grounding voltage differ from zero volts or there is no grounding
at all).
4. Test system have to be connected with power strip delivered by Inframet
company, this power strip should be connected to the mains.
5. Power strip have a standard Europe connector “type E”, presented on the
image.
6. If destination port is of different type, user should provide special
converter.
7. Connection in different ways is prohibited.
8.2 Operation of test system
1. It is recommended to do measurements at typical laboratory conditions.
2. During measurements equipment should be set on the anti-vibration table – very important for
correct results.
3. Take care about temperature of room during measurements, should be set in a range from +10ºC to
30ºC. Recommended temperature is +20ºC to +25ºC.
4. Do not rotate manually the MRW wheel. During rotation of the wheel the motor generate some
voltage (if rotated quickly the voltage pulse can be high) that, if the MRW wheel is connected to
blackbody or light source, can damage the controller. Therefore the recommended way for
exchanging targets is by position control from PC. If needed to rotate MRW wheel manually it is
necessary to remove the RS05 cable that connects MRW wheel with LS-DAL light source.
5. If it is necessary to change targets or to fix new targets please be careful when you unscrew or
screw the target plates. Do not push the screws on the targets plates to much because of risk to
change position of the rotary wheel what can cause non normal behavior of the MRW rotary wheel.
6. Under no circumstances do not turn ON the equipment when water vapor is condensing.
7. It is extremely important to keep proper position of UUT relative to optics of test system.
8. It is recommended to cover all radiation sources aperture always when there is no need to keep it
uncovered.
9. LS-DAL light source should not be used in rooms where influence of the external illumination into
the collimator is higher than the value of the illuminance to be simulated by the light source.
10. LS-DAL light source is typically delivered with a spare halogen bulbs. The replacement of the bulb
is simple. It is necessary to remove the circle cover at the side wall, unscrew the screws, exchange
the bulb and carry out inverse operation.

21/24
11. If LED sources are needed to be replaced (very low probability) please contact Inframet for
additional instructions.
12. It is extremely important to keep target mounted in rotary wheel clean. The active area of the target
cannot be touched by hands and it must be protected from dust.
13. TVT test system is equipped with filters bar placed inside the LS-DAL light source. Filter is
mounted inside filter pocket in LS-DAL light source. There are holes for standard Φ1” filters. To
add new filter unscrew two filter covers on the sides of LS-DAL light source. When filter cover is
removed, the filter adapter will appear. Push it from one side to eject it from the LS-DAL light
source.

8.3 Optics of test system
Dust and stains on Optics can cause scattering, and impurities on the optic surface. That can react with
incident laser light and damage optical coatings. With proper handling and cleaning of your optics, you can
prevent damage and ensure their continued performance.
1. If it's not dirty, don't clean it! – Handling optics increases their chances of getting dirty or damaged,
so you should clean optics only when necessary. You should handle optics in a clean, low-dust
environment while wearing powder-free acetone-impenetrable Gloves or Finger Cots. Since oil and
debris from your hands or from used lens tissue can stain or damage optical coatings, you should not
touch any transmissive or reflective surface of your optic and never reuse a lens tissue. Remember
that lens tissues are inexpensive compared to the price of an optic
2. Use a clean-air duster: Dusting is always the first step in cleaning your
optics. Wiping a dusty optic is like cleaning it with sandpaper. So
always dust with a canned air duster compressed and filtered air, or
nitrogen before wiping any optic. If the dusted optic has no visible
stains after you dust it, then remember: “If it's not dirty, don't clean it.”
If it's still not clean, proper use of solvents and lens tissue can often do
the trick.

3. Make a lens-tissue brush by folding the lens tissue so that the fold is as
wide as the optic to be cleaned. Do not touch any part of the tissue that
will touch the optic. Grip the folded tissue parallel to and near the fold.
Wet the “brush” with acetone and shake off any excess liquid.
4. Blow off the dust. Place the brush on the optic surface, apply slight
pressure and slowly wipe straight across, from one edge of the optic
surface to another.

5. Mirrors can’t be cleaned by tissue!!! Mirrors can be cleaned only with clean-air duster.
8.4 Storage of test system
1. It is recommended to store equipment at typical laboratory conditions.
2. All equipment modules and accessories that have their own suitcases should be stored in them.
Otherwise they can be easily damaged and need to be replaced.
3. Equipment should be set on the stable table.
4. Take care of temperature in room where equipment is stored. Should be set in a range -5ºC to 55ºC.
Different temperature can have some influence on proper work of electronic parts.
5. Take care about humidity in room where equipment is stored. Should be set up to 95% (non
condensing). During normal storage humidity should be not over then 80%.
That settings prevents equipment damage.
6. When you have finished working with test system turn it off and cover the optics on the front wall
by the dust cover.
8.5 Transport
1. In case of transport of test system, be careful during packing.
2. Base modules of test system should be transported in normal working position, on feet – under no
circumstances upside down.
3. Parts which do not have external box or suitcase, have to be secured with cardstrip and foil.
4. During moving do not drop any parts.
5. Equipment should be transported very softly and without any shocks.
8.6 Recalibration period
Recalibration recommendations are presented in certificate of calibration.

9 Troubleshooting
9.1 Imager cannot see the target
1. Check if the upper input hole in the CDT collimator coincide with the hole in the MRW wheel. If not
the collimator cannot see the target and the same is valid for the imager.
2. If the wheel is in proper position then increase illumination while working with VIS/NIR camera.
3. Look what target is in the active position.
4. If the target is small rotate wheel using LS Control to set a bigger target in the active position.
5. Adjust again position of the tested imager and carry out focusing.
9.2 Measurement results are not repeatable
1. Make sure that ambient light is the same during each measurement. To minimize impact of ambient
light it is preferable to work in dark room conditions.
2. Wait before start measurement until ambient light is stable.
9.3 LS-DAL light only high level seems to work
1. Ambient external light is coming to LS-DAL light source and changes indications of the light meter.
2. Reduce illumination in the work room below required illumination level.
9.4 LS-DAL only LED works
1. Replace halogen bulb – follow instructions in Maintenance.
9.5 Software problems
