MATHEMATICS AND MODERN WORLD

3 Topics and construct your own problem:

1 for Age Word Problem

1 for Mixture Problem

1 for Distance, Rate and Time Problem

AGE WORD PROBLEM

A father is 4 times as old her daughter. In 20 years. The father will be twice as old the

Daughter. How old are they now?

Solution

* X be the daughter current age

* 4x be the father's current age (since the father os 4 times as old as the daughter)

4x +20=2(x+20)

Solving

4x+20=2(x+40)

2x+20=40

X=10

Thus, the daughter is currently 10 year old the father, being 4 times older, is:

4x10=40

Answer

*Daughter's age =10 year's

*Father's age =40 year

MIXTURE PROBLEM

one is 10% acid and the other is 30% acid. How much of each solution should you mix to get 10 liters of a
25% acid solution?

Solution:

Let 'x' represent the amount of the 10% acid solution

Let 'y' represent the amount of the 30% acid solution.

x + y = 10 (You want a total of 10 liters)

0.10x + 0.30y = 0.25 * 10 (The amount of acid in each solution should add up to 25% of the total
volume)

You can use substitution or elimination to solve for x and y.

Here's how to solve using substitution:

x = 10 - y

0.10(10 - y) + 0.30y = 2.5

1 - 0.1y + 0.3y = 2.5 => 0.2y = 1.5 => y = 7.5 liters

x + 7.5 = 10 => x = 2.5 liters

Answer:

You should mix 2.5 liters of the 10% acid solution with 7.5 liters of the 30% acid solution to get 10 liters
of a 25% acid solution.
DISTANCE, RATE AND TIME PROBLEM

A car travels 240 miles in 4 hours. What is the car's average speed?

Solution:

Distance = Rate x Time

Distance = 240 miles

Time = 4 hours

Rate = Distance / Time

Rate = 240 miles / 4 hours

Rate = 60 miles per hour

Answer:

The car's average speed is 60 miles per hour.
