Tutorial 3: Graphical Solution of an LP

Problem 1:

Consider the following LP:

𝑀𝑖𝑛 𝑍 = −6 𝑥 + 3𝑦
Subject to:
minimization ki z tethrek lel imin
𝑥 − 2𝑦 ≥ 2 ma3naha rahi min ficnction 9a3da tekbar
2𝑥 + 𝑦 ≤ 6 donc 9a3da nzid nkaber fil minimization
3𝑥 − 𝑦 ≥ 4
𝑥, 𝑦 ≥ 0

1) Determine graphically the feasible region

2) Determine all basic feasible solutions
3) find the optimal solution of the LP using the corner points method
4) Find the optimal solution through another method
5) Is the constraint: 2x+y≤ 6 binding?

Problem 2
Solve the following LP using the graphical method. Specify all basic feasible solutions. Also
determine binding constraints.

Max Z= 3x+4y

St 𝑥 + 2𝑦 ≤ 5
2𝑥 − 𝑦 ≤ 1
𝑥, 𝑦 ≥ 0
Problem 3

Consider the following LP:

𝑀𝑎𝑥 𝑍 = 3𝑥1 + 4𝑥2
s.t. 𝑥1 − 𝑥2 ≤ 5
−4𝑥1 + 3𝑥2 ≤ 8
𝑥1 + 2𝑥2 ≤ 10
𝑥1 ; 𝑥2 ≥ 0

1. Solve the problem graphically

2. Are the constraints x1-x2 ≤5 and -4x1+3x2≤ 8 binding? Explain.
3. Is (7, 2) feasible? Answer by two different methods.
Problem 4
Consider the following LP:
Max z = 5x1 + 7x2
s.t. x1 ≤ 6
2x1 + 3x2 ≤19
x1 + x2 ≤8
x1 , x2 ≥ 0
1. Solve the LP graphically.
2. Specify the nature of each constraint.
3. Suppose that there was a typo in the objective function and the correct one is
z = 5x1 + 7.5x2.
Solve again the LP graphically. Does it matter to have this 0.5 missing in the second
coefficient of the objective function?

Problem 5

Consider the following LP:

Min z= 14x1-22x2
s.t. x1+x2 ≤100
2x1-x2≤ 50
x1 , x2 ≥ 0
1. Solve the LP graphically.
2. Specify the nature of each constraint.
