MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD:

3 topics and construct your own problem:
1 for Age Word Problem
1 for Mixture Problem
1 for Distance, Rate and Time Problem

Age Word Problems:

sally is 3 times as old as John. & gears from now, sally will be twice as old as john. How old is
John?

Sally John Equation

P S J S=3J
F S+8 J+8 S+8=2(J+8)

3J + 8 = 2 (Jx8)
3J + 8 = 2J + 16
-2J -2J
J+8 = 16
-8 = -8
J= 8

P J=8 S=24
F J=10 S=32
Explanation:
To solve this problem lets break it down step by step. let john's current age be s and Sally's
current age be S. since sally is 3 times as old as John, we can write:
Now let’s conside their age John's aged 8 years from now = J+8 Sally's will be twice as old as
John:
S + 8 = 2 (J + 8)
Substitute S = 3J into the equation:
3J + 8 = 2 (J + 8)
Expand and simplify:
3J + 8 = 2J + 16
Subtract 2J from both sides:
J + 8 = 16
Subtract 8 from both sides:
J=8
So, John is currently 8 years old.
To verify let’s check sally age:
S = 3J = 3 (8) = 24
Indeed, Sally is 3 times as old as John 8 years from now:
John’s age = 8 + 8 = 16
Sally’s age =24 + 8 = 32
And, 32 is twice 16!
Mixture Problem
Problem:
A Chemist mixes 30% salt solution and a 50% salt solution to make 20 liters of a 40% salt
solution. How many liters of each solution should be mixed?

Solution:
Let: x = liters of 30% salt solution
y = liters of 50% salt solution
We have two equations:
1, x + y = 20 (total volume)
2, 0.30 x 0.50 y = 8 (total salt)
Solve for x and y:
1, from x + y = 20, get y = 20 – x
2, substitute into the second equation
0.3 x + 0.50 (20 – x 7 = 8, simplify, to get the x = 10, and y = 10

Answer: The chemist should mix 10 liters of the 30% solution and 10 liters of the 50% solution

Explanation:
To solve the problem, we can use a system of equations based on the amount of salt in the
solutions being mixed.
Step 1: Define the variables
Let: x = the number of liters of the 30% salt solution
y= the number of liters of the 50% salt solution.
Step 2. Set up the equations We know two things:
1. The total volume of the mixture is 20 liters. X TY = 20
2. The final solution has 10% salt, which means 10% 20 liters is salt- The total amount of salt in
the mixture is the sum of the salt in the two solutions.
The amount of salt in the 30% solution is 0. 30x (30% of x)
The amount of salt in the 80 % solution is 0.50 y (50% of y).
The amount of salt in the final 20-liter solution is 0.40x20 = 8 liters of salt.
Thus, the second equation is:
0. 30x + 0. 50 y= 8
Step 3: Solve the system of equations
We now have the system:
x + y = 20 (Equation 1)
0.30 x + 0.50 y = 8 (Equation 2)
Solve for y in terms of x using equation 1:
From Equation 1:
y = 20 - x
Substitute this expression for y into equation 2:
0.30 x + 0.50 (20 - x) = 8
Now expand and simplify
0.30 x + 0.50 x = 8
0.20 x + 10 = 8
Subtract 10 from both soles:
- 0.20 x = -2
Solve for x:
−2
x¿ =10
0.20
Find y:
Substitute x = 10 back into equation 1:
10 + y = 20
y = 10
Distance, Rate and Time Problems Problem:
Sarah is driving, to a conference that is 240 miles away from her home. She drives for 3 hours at
an average speed of co miles per hour. How much longer when it take her to reach the
conference it she continues at an average speed of 50 miles per hour for the remaining distance

Solution:
1. Find the distance Sarah has already traveled:
Speed = 60 miles per hour
Time = 3 hours
Distance = Speed X Time = 60 miles/hour
3x hours = 180 miles
2. Find the remaining distance to the conference:
Total distance 240 miles
Distance already traveled = 180 miles
Miles = 60 miles
3. Find the time it will take to travel the remaining distance
Speed = 50 miles per hour
Distance = 60 miles
