Laboratory 4: Differential circuits

In this laboratory experiment you will be characterizing a MOS differential amplifier.

Initial steps:

1. Setup the circuit as shown above. Short body and source of the two n-channel MOS
devices and in this experiment, do not connect the body to the least potential.
2. Be mindful of the substrate/body voltage on the IC. This should necessarily be at the
correct voltage.
3. vA and vB are to be connected, initially to 0 volts.
4. Work out the value of RS (experimentally or otherwise), such that the current through the
nMOS devices is 0.1 mA. Use this value of RS.

Observations, experimentation to be performed:

1. Measure the voltages at all the nodes, and make sure the devices are in saturation. If not,
adjust RS till the current through each device is 0.1 mA.
2. Report the DC operating point of the circuit. Report all node voltages, currents through all
branches. What should the voltages at vCA and vCB been? How different are they from
your expectations and why?
3. Now increase the voltage at vA to 100 mV. vB is still 0. Report the node voltages. Measure
the differential output voltage.
4. Change the setup to vA at 0, vB at 100 mV. Report the node voltages and measure the
differential output voltage.
5. Experimentally measure the differential mode gain.
6. Experimentally measure the common mode gain.
7. Apply a small input signal at a reasonably low frequency (1kHz) to vA, and 0 volts to vB.
Observe the two outputs on the oscilloscope. Use the math-mode of the oscilloscope to
display the differential output voltage.
8. Cross verify the oscilloscope response that you obtained with your measured differential-
mode and commonmode gains.
9. Measure CMRR.
