What is It

Algebraic expression is a symbol or set of symbols resulting from the

application of one or more fundamental operations of addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division to constants and variables.

Constant is a symbol that has a fixed value.

Variable is a symbol having no fixed value and usually denoted by an English

alphabet.

Term is expressed as a product or quotient of a constant and a variable.

Terms are parts of an algebraic expression separated by plus or minus signs.

The number before a variable is called a constant. A symbol which

takes various numerical values is called a variable.
In the formula d = 2r; 2 is a constant whereas, r and d are variables.

The following examples show how evaluating an algebraic is done.

Study each example:

Examples

1 Evaluate 2y + 3 when y = 3.
Solution: = 2(3) + 3 Substituting y by 3
=6+3 Multiplying 2 and 3
=9 Add 6 and 3

2 Evaluate 3(a + 4) + (a - 2) when a = 6

Solution: = 3(6 + 4) + (6 - 2) Substituting a by 6
= 3(10) + 4 Computing 6 + 4 and 6 - 2
= 30 + 4 Multiplying 3 and 10
= 34 Adding 30 and 4

= 2(1) + 3(2) Computing -3 + 4 and 5 - 3
=2+6 Computing 2(1) and 3(2)
=8 Computing 2 + 6

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

1. Which items were labeled as like?
2. How about the unlike?
3. How will you determine if the terms are like or unlike?

What is It

ADDING POLYNOMIALS
Adding polynomials involves combining like terms wherein we add the
numerical coefficients of like terms.

Example 1
Add the polynomials 5x – 2 and -3y + 5x + 2

Solution:
5x – 2 + y + (–3y + 5x + 2)
= 5x + 5x + y – 3y – 2 + 2
= 10x – 2y

Example 2
Find the sum of –7x3y + 4x2y2 – 2 and 4x3y + 1 – 8x2y2

Solution:
–7x3y + 4x2y2– 2 + 4x3y + 1 – 8x2y2
= –7x3y + 4x3y + 4x2y2– 8x2y2 – 2 + 1
= –3x3y – 4x2y2– 1

Example 3
Find the sum of –7x3y + 4x2y2 – 2 and 4x3y + 1 – 8x2y2

Solution:
–7x3y + 4x2y2– 2 + 4x3y + 1 – 8x2y2
= –7x3y + 4x3y + 4x2y2– 8x2y2 – 2 + 1
= –3x3y – 4x2y2– 1

Subtracting Polynomials

In subtracting polynomials, change the sign of the subtrahend then proceed to

addition.

Example 1 Subtract the polynomials.

(4x − 5y2 + 2 − x2) − (−2y + 2x2 − 3x + 7)
10

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Solution:
Note: In changing the sign of the subtrahend, the sign of each term in the 2nd
parentheses changes.

(4x −5y2 + 2 − x2) −(−2y + 2x2 − 3x + 7)

= 4x −5y2 + 2 − x2 + 2y − 2x2 + 3x − 7

Rewrite the expression so that like terms are grouped:

(4x + 3x) + (− x2 − 2x2) + (2 − 7) −5y2 + 2y

Combine like terms by adding the coefficients.

The simplified form of (4x − 5y2 + 2 − x2) −(−2y + 2x2 − 3x + 7) is

7x −3x2 − 5 −5y2 + 2y.

What’s More

Y (2+2x3) + (5x3+4) E (4x – 3x3) - (3x3 + 4x) N (3x – 2x) - (2x – 3x)

M (3+8x2) + (6x2-3x2) A (5x2+5) - (8+2x2)
