Quarter 2: Module 4
Algebraic Expressions
You can say that you have understood the lesson in this module if you can
already:
1. identify the constants, variables, and terms in a given algebraic
expression,
2. evaluate algebraic expressions for given values of the variables and
3. add and subtract polynomials.
What I Know

‘’How do you Group Us?’’
Complete the table below and answer the following questions.
3. How about the variables, can we have different values for the
variables?

Examples
1 Evaluate 2y + 3 when y = 3.
Solution: = 2(3) + 3 Substituting y by 3
=6+3 Multiplying 2 and 3
=9 Add 6 and 3
TASK 4 TASK 5
If A = l x w, what is the If C = 2 r, what is the
value of A? A=? value of C?
r = 5 cm
w = 3 cm
C=?
l = 5 cm
What’s More
‘’Magic Square’’ is a square whose sums of the numbers in rows,
columns, and diagonals are the same.
Use the square below and assign values to x, y, and z and determine the
value of each expression. For example, if x= 5, y = 4 and z =1, then the magic
square is:
-yz y+z xy
xy - z x+y+z -z
-xz xy + z x+y

What is It
ADDING POLYNOMIALS
Adding polynomials involves combining like terms wherein we add the
numerical coefficients of like terms.
Example 1
Add the polynomials 5x – 2 and -3y + 5x + 2
Solution:
5x – 2 + y + (–3y + 5x + 2)
= 5x + 5x + y – 3y – 2 + 2
= 10x – 2y
Example 2
Find the sum of –7x3y + 4x2y2 – 2 and 4x3y + 1 – 8x2y2
Solution:
–7x3y + 4x2y2– 2 + 4x3y + 1 – 8x2y2
= –7x3y + 4x3y + 4x2y2– 8x2y2 – 2 + 1
= –3x3y – 4x2y2– 1
Example 3
Find the sum of –7x3y + 4x2y2 – 2 and 4x3y + 1 – 8x2y2
Solution:
–7x3y + 4x2y2– 2 + 4x3y + 1 – 8x2y2
= –7x3y + 4x3y + 4x2y2– 8x2y2 – 2 + 1
= –3x3y – 4x2y2– 1
Subtracting Polynomials
= 4x −5y2 + 2 − x2 + 2y − 2x2 + 3x − 7

pesos in buying foods, how much money is left in your pocket?

A farmer must add the areas of two plots of land to determine the
amount of seed to plant. The area of plot A can be represented by 3x2 + 7x –
5 square units, and the area of plot B can be represented by 5x2 – 4x + 11
square units. Write a polynomial that represents the total area of both plots
of land.
