Hello Grade 7 learners! In this module, you will learn how to

Translate English phrases to mathematical phrases and English

sentences to mathematical sentences, and vice versa; illustrate and
differentiate related terms in algebra and polynomials.

The module is divided into three (3) lessons, namely:

Lesson 1. Translation of English Phrases and Sentences to Mathematical
Phrases and Sentences

What is It

To translate English phrases to mathematical phrases, we use

variables and appropriate operations to write an expression, an equation or an
inequality that represent verbal descriptions.

English Phrases Mathematical Phrases

1. five more than a number y y+5
2. eight less than a number m m–8
3. a number n times 4 4 ∙ n or 4n or 4(n)
𝑥
4. a number x divided by 6 x ÷ 6 or
6
5. three times the quantity 4 plus a 3 ∙ (4 + d) or 3(4 + d)
number d

When two or more letters, or a number and letter(s), are written next to
each other, it is understood that they are to be multiplied. Thus, 3x means 3
times x. When there is a number involved, the number is always written first.
Parenthesis also represent multiplication.

To translate English verbal phrase into an algebraic expression, we

may need to define one or more variable first. We can translate words for
operations into operation symbols.

The following are the common words used to translate English phrases
to algebraic or mathematical phrases:

Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division

plus minus times divided by
the sum of decreased by the product of the quotient of
increased by the difference of multiplied by per
total fewer than of the ratio of
more than less than
added to subtracted from

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Same is true when we translate mathematical phrases to English
phrases. We have to analyze the mathematical phrase by finding the
appropriate words that are being described, to English phrases.

Examples:

1. ab + 2 the product of a and b added to 2

2. 2x – 3 twice x decreased by 3

𝑦+5
3. the sum of y and 5 divided by 4
4

English sentences can also be translated to mathematical or algebraic

sentences with the use of the words “equal” or “equal to” or “is” or “is equal
to”.

English sentence Mathematical sentence

1. Three more than a number x is 5. x +3 = 5
2. A number y less 2 is equal to 8. y–2=8
3. Four times a number n is equal to 12. 4n = 12
4. The ratio of m and 4 equals 7. 𝑚
=7
4
5. Twice the sum of a number x and 1 is 14. 2( x + 1) = 14

What’s More

Complete the table. Translate the following phrases/sentences to

mathematical phrases/sentences and vice versa.

English phrase/sentence Mathematical

1. 7(y–3)
2. the quotient of a number y and 4

9. seven added to a number x is equal to
twice the same number
10. x–2=3

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

What is It

Algebra comes from the word “al-jabr” meaning “reunion of broken

parts”. Algebra is a branch of mathematics dealing with symbols and the
rules for manipulating those symbols. If we go to a mall or any place, we see
different signboards of stores or establishments, traffic signs, symbols of
objects that signify the place and other signs or symbols associated with the
food or service that they deliver. Same is true with mathematics, there are
symbols used to signify a certain value.
An exponent is a mathematical symbol, wherein “a” is the base and the
exponent is “n” (or index or power). The exponent tells the number of times
the base is used as a factor.

exponent 𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎 𝑥 . . . 𝑥 𝑎

base an and

When n is positive, it corresponds to repeated multiplication. The

exponent is shown as a superscript to the right of the base. The exponential
expression 𝑎𝑛 is read as “a raised to the nth power, a raised to the power n,
or a to the n”.

Examples: 𝑎2 is read as “a squared”

𝑎3 is read as “a cubed”

𝑎3 = 𝑎 ∙ 𝑎 ∙ 𝑎; 24 = 2 ∙ 2 ∙ 2 ∙ 2 =16; (3𝑏)3 = 3𝑏 ∙ 3𝑏 ∙ 3𝑏 = 27𝑏3

A variable is a symbol, usually letters, which represent a value or a

number. A number on its own is called a constant. The replacement set is
the set of values of the variable.

3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 2

constant

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

A term is a constant or a variable or a constant and variable multiplied
together. The number in a term is called the numerical coefficient, while the
letter is the literal coefficient.

In the expression 3𝑥 − 7

we have two terms 3x is one term, - 7 is another term.

for 3x, 3 is the numerical coefficient and x is the literal

coefficient
-7 is a constant

When we identify the constant or a numerical coefficient, we include

the sign of the constant or numerical coefficient.
A variable expression uses variables, numerals, and operation
symbols. Is 3x – 7 a variable expression?

A numerical expression is composed of two or more constants.

Expressions are usually named by the last operation to be performed in

the expression.

Examples: x + 3 is a sum since the operation in the expression is

addition
x – 3y is a difference because the last operation is

subtraction

Algebraic expression is a statement containing one or more terms

connected by plus or minus signs.

Similar terms are algebraic terms that have the same literal factors
and in which each letter has the same exponent in all of the terms.

What is It

A polynomial is an algebraic expression that represents a sum of one

or more terms containing whole number exponents on the variables.
Conditions for expressions to be polynomials
1. no negative exponents

2. no variable in the denominator, no variable under the radical sign

3. no fractional exponents

Classification of Polynomials
A. According to Number of Terms
Classification Number of terms Examples
Monomial one 3x, 5a, 7
Binomial two 3b – 7
Trinomial three x2 + 3x + 4
Multinomial more than three 2x2 - x + 3

B. According to the Degree

Degree Example Classification
1 3x + 2y Linear
2 2x2 - 3x +2 Quadratic
3 5x3+ 4x2 – 3x + 1 Cubic

The degree of a term that has only one variable is the exponent of that
variable. Example: 2 x2 , the degree is 2

15

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

The degree of a polynomial that has only one variable is the highest
power appearing in any of the terms. Example: a4+ 3a3 – 2a, the degree is 4

The degree of a term that has more than one variable is the sum of the
exponents of the variables.
Example: x2y + x2y2 – xy ; x2y has a degree of 3 because the sum of
the exponents (2 + 1) ; x2y2 has a degree of 4, (2 + 2); and xy has a degree of
2, (1 + 1)
The conventional way of arranging polynomials is arranging the
exponents in increasing or descending order. When the polynomial is
arranged in descending order, the numerical coefficient with the highest
exponent is the leading coefficient.

Example: 3𝑏4 + 5𝑏3 − 4𝑏2 + 7 polynomial arranged in descending

order, leading coefficient is 3

Evaluating an Algebraic Expression

Substitution Property of Equality – If two quantities are equal, then

one quantity can be replaced by the other. In symbols:
For all numbers a and b, if a = b, then a may be replaced by b.
When a number is substituted by a numerical value, finding the value is
called evaluating the polynomial.

Evaluate these polynomials.

1. 6𝑥 2 + 3, when x = 3

2. 𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 − 4, when x = 2
𝑥−3
3. , when x = 2, y = 4
𝑦+1

Solutions:

1. 6𝑥 2 + 3 = 6(3) +3 = 18 + 3 = 21

2. 𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 − 4 = (2)3 − 3(2) − 4 = 8 − 6 − 4 = 2
𝑥−3 2−3 −1 1
3. 𝑦+1 = 4+1 = 5
