Quarter 2: Module 3
Introduction to Algebra
You can say that you understood the lesson in this module if you can already:
1. translate English phrases to mathematical phrases and vice versa
2. translate English sentences to mathematical sentences and vice
versa
3. illustrate and interpret the meaning of a n where n is a positive
integer
4. illustrate and differentiate between constants and variables in given
algebraic expressions
5. illustrate and differentiate literal coefficients from numerical
coefficients in each algebraic expression
6. evaluate algebraic expressions for given values of the variables
7. illustrate and differentiate the terms of algebraic expressions and
which are polynomials
8. illustrate and differentiate polynomials according to degree and
number of terms
What’s In
1. ≥ A. equals
2. = B. greater than or equal
3. * C. parenthesis
4. [ ] D. asterisk
5. ( ) E. bracket
What’s New
Directions: Choose the words or expressions inside the box and write it under
its respective symbol.
+ - x ÷ < > ≤ ≥ ≠
When two or more letters, or a number and letter(s), are written next to
each other, it is understood that they are to be multiplied. Thus, 3x means 3
times x. When there is a number involved, the number is always written first.
Parenthesis also represent multiplication.
The following are the common words used to translate English phrases
to algebraic or mathematical phrases:
Examples:
2. 2x – 3 twice x decreased by 3
𝑦+5
3. the sum of y and 5 divided by 4

What I Can Do
Copy the given blocks on construction paper and cut. Match the algebraic
expression with the English expressions and play just like in a domino game.
Paste the matching blocks on bond paper and attach your output in the
module. Prepare the last block for the last given expression.

Similar terms are algebraic terms that have the same literal factors
and in which each letter has the same exponent in all of the terms.
11
Guide questions:
1. Are the literal coefficients also the variables?
2. From the first example, what is the exponent of the term 2x? Why?

What is It
Classification of Polynomials
A. According to Number of Terms
Classification Number of terms Examples
Monomial one 3x, 5a, 7
Binomial two 3b – 7
Trinomial three x2 + 3x + 4
Multinomial more than three 2x2 - x + 3
The degree of a term that has only one variable is the exponent of that
variable. Example: 2 x2 , the degree is 2
15
The degree of a term that has more than one variable is the sum of the
exponents of the variables.
Example: x2y + x2y2 – xy ; x2y has a degree of 3 because the sum of
the exponents (2 + 1) ; x2y2 has a degree of 4, (2 + 2); and xy has a degree of
2, (1 + 1)
The conventional way of arranging polynomials is arranging the
exponents in increasing or descending order. When the polynomial is
arranged in descending order, the numerical coefficient with the highest
exponent is the leading coefficient.
1. 6𝑥 2 + 3, when x = 3
2. 𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 − 4, when x = 2
𝑥−3
3. , when x = 2, y = 4
𝑦+1
Solutions:
1. 6𝑥 2 + 3 = 6(3) +3 = 18 + 3 = 21
2. 𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 − 4 = (2)3 − 3(2) − 4 = 8 − 6 − 4 = 2
𝑥−3 2−3 −1 1
3. 𝑦+1 = 4+1 = 5
= −5
