What I Need to Know

Researches and studies were made and created by different art enthusiasts
around the world but despite numerous availability of several courses in art history
and appreciation, it will still take several hours and somehow a longer period of
individual study to really get a grasp of the similarities and differences of Renaissance
and Baroque Period. Art experts know that if an artwork, a painting or sculpture is
made in Europe between 1300 and 1600, it’s likely a Renaissance work. And, if it’s
a European work made between 1600 and 1750, then it’s Baroque. But the difficulty
lies in the fact that if you don’t know the dates of a work, or if you don’t know the
particular artist and supporting details on their background the artist lived, how can
we tell if it’s Baroque or Renaissance? After going through this module, you are
expected to:

1. reflects on and derive the mood, idea or message from selected artworks
2. discusses the use or function of artworks by evaluating their utilization and
combination of art elements and principles
3. uses artworks to derive the traditions/history of an art period
4. compares the characteristics of artworks produced in the different art periods
5. explains the influence of iconic artists belonging to the Renaissance and the
Baroque periods
6. applies different media techniques and processes to communicate ideas,
experiences, and stories showing the characteristics of the Renaissance and
the Baroque periods (Fresco, Sfumato, etc.)
7. evaluates works of art in terms of artistic concepts and ideas using criteria
from the Renaissance and the Baroque periods
8. shows the influences of the Renaissance and Baroque periods on the
Philippine art form

Lesson
Renaissance and Baroque Arts
1 Functions, Influences and Characteristics

It is a foundation for learning that the difference between these two eras, styles
and characteristics, according to studies, might be considered helpful if we begin
with two keywords. A good word for Renaissance art is “stabilize,” while a good one
for the Baroque is “dramatize.” The demonstration of the importance of these two
words is to look at art in the 21st-century world of science fiction. The reflection that
is rippled in the succeeding years that even the present generation can distinguish
is noted with authenticity. The “drama” and “stability” separates both but has
somehow strongly built a unique impression to a global audience in the arts world.

Let us talk about deepened difference on the artists’ brush strokes, their uses,
the wider field of topics of Baroque, its vast grandeur and drama, the maddening
abundance of Greco-Roman illusions in the Renaissance is somehow sufficient
enough but it is more important that we begin with our own exploration of these eras
and styles in this course. The key words “stabilize” and “dramatize” for the
Renaissance and Baroque, respectively, and the functions that they play in the
community are the two contrasting distinctions to learn. Draw these ideas out in
their art which remains consistent with other things to be discovered. Now, examine
the styles for yourself and discover new differences on your own. Look very carefully

With the remarkable differences of Renaissance and Baroque Period there are still
resemblances, despite the fact that Baroque was motivated by a completely different
set of ideals. Baroque is highly parallel in almost all elements with regards to high-
renaissance art, but it progressed stylistically motivated by a desire from the Church
to project the call for wealth and power it acquired during the Renaissance. A
simplified way to think of Baroque is that it began to move the artistic ball away from
purely representative art, into a realm which was more stylized. We don’t often think
of the Renaissance as “practical” but that is exactly what it was.

The following pictures will clarify a clearer and simpler discussion on the comparison
of Renaissance and Baroque Arts, which has influenced the history of arts and crafts
in the community of Classic and Western ideas.
