The Internet's History

The Internet - a network or system that connects millions of computers worldwide
Invention of the Internet :
 1960s - the United States government, businesses, and colleges collaborated to develop a
system that would allow computers across the country to share information
 1969 - they developed ARPANET, an early form of the Internet
 Electronic mail, or e-mail - was invented in 1971 as a method of sending a message
from one computer to another.
 By the mid-1970s - many groups of computers had been linked together in networks
 To connect the networks, machines known as routers were invented
 This is how the first ARPANET evolved into the Internet
 Hypertext was invented in 1989
 A hypertext link - connects different parts of an electronic document or different
documents
 The World Wide Web, or "the Web," was created in the early 1990s on the basis of
hypertext

World Wide Web

- The most popular internet service

- Websites are viewed using Internet browsers
- Each website has its own Internet address, which is referred to as a uniform resource
locator, or URL
- The information on the Internet is organized into sites or pages
- Websites are created using a programming language known as hypertext markup
language (HTML)
- Many URLs start with the letter “www,” which stands for “World Wide Web”

Electronic Mail (Email)

- The sending and receiving of email is the second most common use of the internet
- Email is a private communication medium that is sent from one user to another
- Instant messaging (such as AIM or ICQ) is similar to email, but it allows two or more people
to communicate much more quickly

DO PROTECT PERSONAL INFORMATION

- Keep personal information such as your full name, address, phone number, and school
name private. Only share this information with trusted individuals

DO REPORT CYBERBULLYING
- If you are a victim of cyberbullying or witness it happening to someone else, report it to a
trusted adult and the appropriate authorities or platform administrators.
DO THINK BEFORE YOU POST

- Be mindful of what you share online. Once you post something, it's difficult to erase.
- Consider the potential consequences of your posts on your reputation and future
opportunities.
DO USE STRONG AND UNIQUE PASSWORDS

- Create strong passwords using a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols

- Use different passwords for different accounts to prevent unauthorized access.

DO VERIFY ONLINE FRIENDS

- Be cautious when making online friends, especially if you haven't met them in person.\
- Don't share personal information or agree to meet someone from the internet without
involving a trusted adult.
DO BE CAUTIOUS WITH LINKS AND DOWNLOADS

- Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading files from untrusted source.

- Be especially cautious of email attachments or links from unknown senders.

DO KEEP SOFTWARE UPDATED

- Regularly update your devices and software to patch security vulnerabilities.

- Use antivirus and anti-malware software to protect against threats.

DO PRACTICE DIGITAL ETIQUETTE

- Be polite and respectful when communicating online, including in emails, chats, and
comment
- Think before you type, and remember that words can have a lasting impact.

YOU SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH USING THE INTERNET AND
DIGITAL DEVICES WHILE FOSTERING RESPONSIBLE ONLINE BEHAVIOR AND SAFETY!
Internet

- The Internet is a worldwide system of interconnected computer networks.

- When you connect your computer to the Internet via your Internet Service
Provider (ISP), you become part of the ISPs network, which is connected to
other networks that make up the Internet.
To connect to the Internet, the following are needed:

- Computer
- Telephone Line
- Router/Modem
- ISP
- Web browser
- Project Goals

Intranet
- An intranet is a network that works like the Internet but is only available within
a particular organization, not to the public.

- An intranet may have web pages used to share company specific data within
that company, such as internal telephone numbers or details of employee
benefits.
Network

- Computer network is a group of two or more computer systems connected

together

- Computer networks serve a number of purposes:

- communications such as email, instant messaging, chat rooms, etc.

- shared hardware such as printers and input devices.

- shared data and information through the use of shared storage devices.

- shared software, which is achieved by running applications on remote

computers.

- Most computer networks have at least one server.

- A server is a powerful computer that provides one or more services to a network

and its users, for example, file storage and e-mail.
Types of Network

- Personal Area Network (PAN)

- Local Area Network (LAN)
- Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
- Wide Area Network (WAN)

Personal Area Network (PAN)

- Two computers are connected

Local Area Network (LAN)

- A LAN covers a small area such as one site or building, e.g., a school or a
university campus.
- It is a privately owned computer network covering a small Networks
geographical area, like a home, office, or groups of buildings
Metropolitan Area Network

- MAN is larger than a local area network

- It covers the area of a single city.

- MANs rarely extend beyond 100 KM

- Comprise a combination of different hardware and transmission media

Wide Area Network

- WAN covers a large geographical area

- Most WANs are made from several LANs connected together

- It is a world wide web (www)

How are computers connected?

- Wireless connection (Wifi)

- Wired connection (may gamit na chord or cables)
