The following questions are Case-based questions. Each question has an
internal choice and carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each. Read the passage carefully
and answer the questions that follow.
29. We can measure energy changes associated with chemical or physical (4)
processes by an experimental technique called calorimetry. In calorimetry,
the process is carried out in a vessel called calorimeter, which is immersed in

a known volume of a liquid. Knowing the heat capacity of the liquid in which
calorimeter is immersed and the heat capacity of calorimeter, it is possible to
determine the heat evolved in the process by measuring temperature changes.

30. According to Arrhenius theory, acids are substances that dissociate in water (4)

after accepting proton. Buffer solution is a solution whose pH does not
change. By adding small amount of H+ or OH-. The decrease in concentration
of the ion by adding another ion as common ion is called common ion effect.
Ksp (solubility product) is product of molar concentrations of ions raised to
power no. of ions per formula of ions per formula of the compound in
sparingly soluble salt. Precipitation occurs only if ionic product exceeds
solubility product. Solubility of salt decreases in presence of common ion. K w
the ionic product of water is 1x10-14 at 298K. Kw increases with increase in
temperature. pH is –log[H3O+], where [H3O+] =cα in monoprotic acid, is
molar conc., α is degree of ionisation
