Frank Read Source

(Dislocation
multiplication)

Some of the slides are taken from Prof. Anandh Subramaniam

What are these ?
• These lines are in microns

• But burger vector is of the order Ao

Requires 104-105 dislocations on the same slip plane

These dislocations must have generated during

deformation

Observations
• Annealed crystal: dislocation density () ~
106 – 1010 m/m3.
Slip lines in polycrystalline copper • Cold worked crystal:  ~ 1012 – 1014 m/m3.

Widely accepted mechanism for dislocation generation is based on

Dislocation line segment pinned
at A and B by precipitates*

* Pinning could (also) be caused by:

 Dislocation in the plane of the paper intersects
dislocations in other planes
 Anchored by impurity atoms or precipitate particles

At room temperature, what can dislocation do ?

Remember bowing ??
+ and  segments come

to expand the loop
After this decreasing stress is required to expand the loop
