This report is dedicated to Almighty God who out of his infinite mercies

saw me through my one month industrial training, and to my caring and lovely

parents for their relentless support.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I am highly delighted and very glad to the glory of Almighty God for

given me the strength to undergo this 1 month industrial training programme.

My sincere gratitude goes to my parents, for their love, care and support right

from the day I was given birth to till date.

My gratitude goes to the organization for their support and acceptance to

be able to undergo the four months industrial training (I.T)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUTION AND OBJECTIVE OF SIWES

The students industrial work Experience scheme (SIWES) is skills

Training program designed to expose and prepare students of universities,

polytechnics/colleges of technology/colleges of Agriculture and colleges of

Education for the industrial work situation, they are likely to meet after

graduation. The scheme also affords students the opportunity of familiarizing

and exposing themselves to the needed experience in handling equipment and

machinery that are usually not available in their institutions.

Before the establishment of the scheme, there was a growing concern

among our industrialists that graduates of our institutions of Higher learning

lacked adequate practical background studies preparatory for employment in

industries. Thus, the employers were of the opinion that the theoretical

education going on in higher institutions was not responsive to the needs of the

employers of labour.

It is against this background that the rationale for initiating designing the

scheme by the fund during its formative years-1973/74 was introduced to

acquaint students with the skills of handling employer’s equipment and

machinery.

The ITF solely funded the scheme during its formative years. But as the

financial involvement became unbearable to the fund, it withdrew from the

scheme in 1978.
The Federal Government handed over the scheme in 1979 to both the

National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical

Education (NATE). Later the Federal Government in November 1984 reverted

the management and implementation of the SIWES programme to ITF and it

was effectively taken over by the Industrial Training Fund in July 1985 with the

funded being solely borne by the Federal Government.

The scheme exposes students to industry based skills necessary for a

smooth transition from the classroom to the world of work. It affords students of

tertiary institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the

needed experience in handling machinery and equipment which are usually not

available in Educational institutions.

Participation in SIWES has become a necessary precondition for the

award of diploma and degree certificates in specific disciplines in most

institutions of higher learning in the country, In accordance with the education

policy of Government.
CHAPTER TWO

TRAINING OBTAINED

I was introduced to Mavis beacon in order to know how to type faster and

master keys. I was also introduced to keyboard properly various type of

keyboard and also show how to use computer.

We were introduced to Microsoft word and how to make use of the icon

displayed on the screen e.g. font, paragraph, and clipboard page layout e.t.c.

GATHERING DATA: Information located on the internet or discovered

through personal trails can be gathered, sorted and prepared with computer.

FORMATTING DATA: processing the collected data into assorted formats

which are useable in the line of work day. It can also be used to add or remove

employees when needed.

Network allows for easy transfer of file and work related information

between computer and allows the network to access shared files. Taught the

function and use of Microsoft word; we also did normal office work like,

printing, snapping of passport and photo copy.

Also i did normal office work which include typing, and printing,

photocopying accessing the internet such as creating of email. Office work was

done today such as printing, photocopying scanning of ID card and also

accessing the internet. I was taught some icons on Corel draw which includes

free hand tools, shapes, layout e.t.c.

MACHINES USED DURING MY I.T

Machines found in the organization, I was taught how the machines are

used.

1. Central processing unit (CPU)

2. Keyboard

3. Mouse

4. Monitor

5. Printer

6. Photocopy machine

7. Scanner etc.

Central Processing Unit (CPU): The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the

main chip in a computer. The CPU processes instructions, performs

calculations and manages the flow of information through a computer system.

Mouse: The mouse allows you to move, select and click on objects.

Monitor or Screen: This is the TV type screen on which you see the work

you’re doing on your computer.

Keyboard: The keyboard is used to type in information and operate the

computer.

Printer: A device that makes a printed copy of your work on a sheet of paper.

SKILLS LEARNT

 I learnt different networking topologies, worked with different

networking devices like the hubs, switches, routers and network printers.
 I got to know how to solve some networking problem both on the intranet

and the internet.

 I was also able to identify various component used to develop network

connections, like the modem and network cards.

 How to terminate network (twisted pair) cables and how to connect

computers to the local area network.

 How to troubleshoot various networking problems, like when a user has

connectivity problem, inability to log on to his or her user account etc.

 Configuration of wireless connection on laptops and desktops.

 Configuration of switches, hubs and routers.

 How to lay network cables.

 How to install network printer and add it to a system.

 Adding systems to a domain and creating of network between computers

and other peripherals.

CHAPTER THREE

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AT WORK PLACE

At the workshop, the major problems were due to the fact that the

software we use was outdated. And there was a problem getting genuine

software and applications for users. As such we resulted in purchasing

substandard software or downloading them from the internet, which takes a lot

of time. There was also a time when the number of IT students at the workshop

was small and this resulted to some students being overworked.

RECOMMENDATION

For subsequent trainees being taken up by the company, I strongly

recommend a more stringent supervision of their training program, as this will

go a long way in ensuring that trainees do not lose focus and will constantly

remind them that their services to the company remain valuable.

Also I suggest ITF should liaise with some companies where they will

take up students for industrial training. This will help students who find it

difficult to find attachments or who end up in companies where they do nothing.
