Computer Hardware

Specifications
Suitability of a Computer System
• Individuals and Organizations uses desktop and
mobile devices everyday to complete tasks.
• When shopping for a computer there is usually a
wide selection of desktops, laptops and smart
phones.
• Understanding the specification of the computer
system will allow you to select the best system for
your needs
System Specifications
Computer hardware specifications are technical descriptions of the
computer's components and capabilities.
It includes:
•Processor speed, model and manufacturer.
•Random Access Memory (RAM
•Hard disk
•Other specifications might include network (ethernet or wi-fi) adapters
or audio and video capabilities.
Processing Speed
The 2 main features of a CPU are:
1. Speed
2. Type

Processor speed is typically indicated in gigahertz (GHz) (Older

computers were measured in megahertz(MHz). The higher the
number, the faster the computer.
MHz- executes approx 1million instructions per second
GHz- executes approx 1billion instructions per second

The most Common Processors are Intel and AMD

Processing Speed
Memory
Random Access Memory – it is important to know its capacity, type, word
size and Speed
Memory capacity:- Memory capacity is measured in Gigabytes(GB)
The more RAM in a computer the more it can do simultaneously.
Memory type:- There are 2 type of RAM (SDRAM) and (RDRAM)
Word Size:- Word size determines the number of bits that can be stored and
processed at a time by the CPU.eg. 32-bit or 64-bt
Storage (Capacity & Speed)
The 2 main specifications to note for a hard disk are its:
1. Storage capacity
2. Speed
Storage capacity: This determines the amount of information that can
be stored for later use. Hard disk capacity is measured in GB and
ranges from 120GB- 2TBS
Speed:- Hard disk speeds are normally expressed as data transfer
rates or revolutions per minute(rpm).
Other specifications
Other Specifications include:
1. Software
2. Input & Output Devices
3. Network connections (ethernet or wi-fi)
4. Audio & Video capabilities
