ESC201 Introduction to Electronics Lab 02 Handout: Pre-Lab Homework

Network Theorems, I-V Characteristics of Two-terminal Elements & Networks
The aim of the pre-lab exercise is to calculate the expected results of some circuits that will be used in lab to
experimentally verify the Superposition and Thevenin’s theorems. In this pre-lab, you will find the Thevenin
equivalent of a linear network. Also, you will analyze and design networks using the Superposition theorem.

1. (2 marks) Calculate the Thevenin voltage VTH and the Thevenin resistance RTH of the circuit of Fig. P1a.
2. (1 mark) Using the Thevenin equivalent circuit obtained in the previous part, calculate VAB for the circuit
shown in Fig. P1b for two values of RL: (i) RL = 220 Ω, and (ii) RL = 680 Ω.
3. (2 marks) Use the Superposition theorem to find VAB for the circuit of Fig. P1b and fill out the table below.
RL = 220 Ω RL = 680 Ω
V1 = 5V source acting alone Theory: VAB = Theory: VAB =
V2 = 12V source acting alone Theory: VAB = Theory: VAB =

Pre-Lab for Experiment 2: I-V Characteristic of Linear Two-terminal Network (2 marks)

1. (1 mark) From the VAB obtained in the previous part for the circuit of Fig. P1b, estimate IL for each case:
(i) RL = 220 Ω, (ii) RL = 680 Ω. From these two data-points of (IL, VAB), plot the IL vs VAB characteristic.
2. (1 mark) Write down the equation relating Imeas and Vtest as shown in Fig. P2 using the Thevenin equivalent
circuit obtained above and plot the (Imeas, Vtest) characteristic. How are (IL, VAB) and (Imeas, Vtest) related?

Pre-Lab for Experiment 3: Circuit Design using the Superposition Theorem (3 marks)
In the circuit of Fig. P3, the values of R2 and R3 are such that VAB = [1.5 Sin(ωt) – 2.4] V for RL = 680 Ω.
Using the superposition method, answer the following:

1. (1 mark) Find the equation relating R2 and R3 when the DC voltage source is acting alone.
2. (1 mark) Find the equation relating R2 and R3 when the AC voltage source is acting alone.
3. (1 mark) From the above two equations, find the values of R2 and R3.
