1. A jet of alcohol strikes the vertical plate in given Fig. below. A force F = 425 N is
required to hold the plate stationary. Assuming there are no losses in the nozzle,
estimate (a) the mass flow rate of alcohol and (b) the absolute pressure at
section 1.

2. A jet of water 3 cm in diameter strikes normal to a plate as in given figure. If the

force required to hold the plate is 23 N, what is the jet velocity?

3. Explain the Magnus effect and provide examples of how it is observed in real-
world situations. How does the spin of a ball or object influence the Magnus
effect, and how is it used in various sports and engineering applications?

4. In the context of potential flow theory, explain the pressure variation around a
cylinder experiencing fluid flow. How does Bernoulli's principle relate to the
pressure distribution on the cylinder's surface? Describe how the pressure
coefficient is used to quantify the pressure distribution and identify regions of low
and high pressure.

5. A two dimensional incompressible flow is given by the velocity field V = 3yi + 2xj,
in arbitrary units. Does this flow satisfy continuity? If so, find the stream function
ψ(x, y) and plot a few streamlines, with arrows.

6. A wide moving belt passes through a container of a viscous liquid. The belt
moves vertically upward with a constant velocity, U as illustrated in the figure.
Because of viscous forces the belt picks up a film of fluid of thickness. Gravity
tends to make the fluid drain down the belt. Assume that the flow is laminar,
steady, and fully developed and that the atmosphere produces no shear at the
outer surface of the film. Use the Navier Stokes equations to determine an
expression for the velocity profile of the fluid film as it is dragged up the belt.
State clearly the boundary conditions at y = 0 and y = h to be satisfied by the
velocity.
