1-Calculate the change in vertical height of a Watt governor when its speed-
(i) increases from 50 rpm to 51 rpm, and
(ii) increases from 200 rpm to 201 rpm.
2- Determine : (i) Maximum speed , (ii) Minimum speed and (iii) range of speed of a Watt governor of
open arm type shown in Fig.1, in which length of arm AE = 200 mm and length EF = 30 mm when
angle θ changes from 40° to 30°.

3- Calculate the minimum speed, maximum speed and range of the speed of a porter governor, which
has equal arms each 200 mm long and pivoted on the axis of rotation. The mass of each ball is 4 kg
and the central mass on the sleeve is 20 kg. The radius of rotation of the ball is 100 mm when the
governor begins to lift and 130 mm when the governor is at maximum speed.

4- Calculate the minimum speed, maximum speed and range of the speed of a porter governor, which
has equal arms each 200 mm long and pivoted on the axis of rotation. The mass of each ball is 4 kg
and the central mass on the sleeve is 20 kg. The radius of rotation of the ball is 100 mm when the
governor begins to lift and 130 mm when the governor is at maximum speed. If the friction at the
sleeve is equivalent to 15 N, then determine the range of speed.

5- A Porter governor has all four arms 300 mm long. The upper arms are pivoted on the axis of
rotation and lower arms are attached to the sleeve at a distance of 3.5 mm from the axis. The mass of

1
each ball is 7 kg and mass on the sleeve is 54 kg. if the extreme radii of rotation of the balls are 200
mm and 250 mm, find the range of speed of the governor.

6- The lengths of the upper and lower arms of a porter governor are 200 mm and 250 mm respectively.
Both the arms are pivoted on the axis of rotation. The central load is 150 N, the weight of each ball is
20 N and friction of the sleeve together with the resistance of the operating gear is equivalent to a force
of 30 N at the sleeve. If the limiting inclinations of the upper arms to the vertical are 30° and 40°,
determine the range of the speed of the governor.

7- Calculate the minimum speed of a Proell governor, which has equal arms each 200 mm and pivoted
on the axis of rotation. The mass of each ball is 4 kg and central mass on the sleeve is 20 kg. the
extension arms of the lower links are each 60 mm long and parallel to the axis when the minimum
radius of the ball is 100 mm.

8- A Hartnell governor having a central sleeve spring and two right angled bell crank levers operates
between 290 rpm and 310 rpm for a sleeve lift of 15 mm. the sleeve arms and the ball arms are 80 mm
and 120 mm respectively. The levers are pivoted at 120 mm from the governor axis and the mass of
each ball is 2.5 kg. The ball arms are parallel to the governor axis at the lowest equilibrium speed.
Determine: (i) loads on the spring at the lowest and the highest equilibrium speeds and (ii) stiffness of
the spring.

9-In a spring loaded Hartnell type of governor, the mass of each ball is 4 kg and the lift of the sleeve is 50 mm. the
governor begins to float at 240 rpm, when the radius of the ball path is 110 mm. the mean working speed of the governor is
20 times the range of the speed when friction is neglected. The lengths of the ball and roller arms of the bell crank lever are
120 mm and 100 mm respectively. The pivot centre and the axis of the governor are 140 mm apart. Determine the initial
compression of the spring, taking into account the obliquity of the arms.
If the friction is equivalent to a force of 20 N at the sleeve, find the total alteration in speed before the sleeve begins to
move from mid position.
10- (a) what is meant by the term : stability of a governor? Derive the necessary condition of stability of a centrifugal
governor.
(b) what are the criteria that are taken into account to judge the quality of governing? Show that the sensitiveness for a Watt
and a Porter governor having all arms equal in length and interseting on axis, is the same.
(c) Explain the terms:sensitiveness, stability, isochronism and hunting in connection with governors.
(d) what do you mean by controlling force and controlling force curve.
