Unit 2

Design against Fatigue

Assume any missing data.

1. A notched rectangular component is to be forged from a steel plate of thickness 10 mm to

withstand an axial reversible load F. The material strengths are Syt =400 MPa and Sut =(Roll
No 1-9 X 100), ( 400+ Roll NoX10 for Roll Nos 10-40), (300+ Roll NoX10 for Roll Nos 41-80)
MPa with a reliability of 99.9%. Find the value of static load, the endurance limit and the life
of the component.

2. Assuming that F in the above problem fluctuates between zero and its maximum value for
repeated loading, find the maximum allowable value of F for a factor of safety of 3 against
both yield and fatigue failure.
3. A stepped shaft made of steel having Su = 1200MPa is finished by grinding the surface. It is
loaded with a fluctuating zero-to-maximum torque. Estimate the magnitude of maximum
torque which would provide a safety factor of 1.3 with respect to a 75,000 cycle fatigue life.
D= (Roll No 1- 9 X10.5), Roll No (11-80), d= (D-2)mm, q=0.6.

4. A shaft is to be designed for transmission. It is fabricated from cold drawn steel having Sut =
650 MPa and Syt = 400 MPa and is required to be subjected to a fluctuating torque which
varies from –00 N-m to + Roll Number X 10 N-m. The factor of safety is 3 and the expected
reliability is 90%. Neglecting the effect of stress concentration, determine the diameter of
the shaft. Assume the distortion energy theory of failure.
5. A simply supported beam has a concentrated load at the centre which fluctuates from a
value of P to 4P. The span of the beam is Roll No 1-16 X100, Roll No 17-80 X15 mm and its
cross-section is circular with a diameter of 80 mm. The beam material has ultimate stress of
700 MPa, a yield stress of 500 MPa, endurance limit of 330 MPa for reversed bending, and a
factor of safety of 2, calculate the maximum value of P. Take a size factor of 0.85 and a
surface finish factor of 0.9.
6. A transmission shaft of a gear box is fabricated from cold drawn steel having Sut = 500 N/mm2
and Syt = 300 N/mm2 . The shaft is subjected to a fluctuating torque which varies from –200
N-m to + 600 N-m. The factor of safety is 2 and the expected reliability is 90%. Neglecting the
effect of stress concentration, determine the diameter of the shaft.
Assume the distortion energy theory of failure.
7. Draw the Modified Goodman’s Diagram and find Sa and Sm for:
I. components subjected to fluctuating axial or bending stresses; and
II. components subjected to fluctuating torsional shear stresses.
8. Find the magnitude Sa and Sm if the machine component is subjected to two-dimensional
stresses, or to combined bending and torsional loads.
