Date set: 10th January 2022
Deadline: 6th April 2022 (12:00 noon)
Grade returned: TBC
Resit deadline: TBC

The purpose of this assessment:

The purpose of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to demonstrate your
ability to produce certain basic elements of a business plan for a new business and to
show your understanding of the key issues surrounding setting up a business and the
role of marketing in a business.
What you will do:
You will do marketing research to help develop certain basic elements of a business
plan and you will present your findings in a structured report and reference all sources
properly using the APA system, a guide to which can be found here: APA Quick Guide
2020.pdf (chester.ac.uk).

You have to imagine you are in this situation:

You have a job but you have realised that selling your time for money is not the only
option you have in your financial life. You have decided that you want the challenge of
having an income from a profitable business so that you can reduce- or even eliminate-
the amount of time you have to sell to your employer. You are committed to creating
a new business and making it sustainably profitable. Good luck!
What you will need to produce:
You will need to produce a business idea and a ‘business plan report’ that is based on
initial market research. This should include all of the following sections:
Section One: An “Introduction” section (200 words total) which introduces the
reader to:
1. A clear summary of your proposed business idea and the market ‘gap’ your
business will fill (100 words)

2. Your relevant skills and experience in relation to the business (50 words)
3. The location of your proposed business and reason for this choice (50 words)
Section Two: A “Research Presentation” (5 x 360 words) section which
provides evidence of substantial research in each of these areas:
4. A PESTEL analysis, leading into to a SWOT analysis
5. A competition analysis
6. An industry analysis (Porter’s 5 forces model is useful for this)
7. Identification of your target market (including segmentation criteria employed)
8. Your marketing plan (structured around the 4 Ps)
You may also use appendices sparingly for any crucial data or examples you need to
refer or draw upon in your main report. This is not required.
The amount you will write:
Your report is expected to contain around 2,000 words (excluding you reference list
and any appendices). You are allowed 10% either side of this. So, your report will
contain 1,800-2,200 words. Writing at the higher end of this scale does not
automatically increase your chance of passing.
You will do it by yourself:
This is an individual assignment. The University of Leeds Trinity/Waltham
International College will apply in all cases on copying, plagiarism or any other
methods by which students have obtained (or attempted to obtain) an unfair
advantage.
You will need to submit your report before the deadline:
Ensure that the assignment is handed in on time (before 12.00 noon) and retain a
copy of your submitted receipt.
You must upload an electronic copy of your assignment to Turnitin as a Word
document. The Turnitin link can be found in WIC website from LTU section (Moodle).
You will pass if you have shown four things:

Mark criterion 1: Your understanding of the principles of marketing and the

application of these. (Topics should include: analysing the external environment,
competition and competitive advantage, market segmentation and target markets.)

Mark criterion 2: Your ability to find and draw upon relevant material to show you
can undertake simple market research and apply it.

Mark criterion 3: A well-structured report.

Mark criterion 4: Relevant academic sources are generally used to support the
points in your report and these are properly referenced using the APA style.

Making Use of Feedback:
Feedback for guidance before submission
I will give you feedback before you submit your assignment. This will happen during your
timetabled sessions and possibly in scheduled appointments outside of those sessions.
I will be able to answer questions about your work and provide guidance as to how you
can improve it before submission.
I will be happy to read essay plans/presentation outlines/etc. and give guidance on
approach and content. I cannot read a full draft of a report. There is not enough time.
Where you want to take a draft of an essay/etc. to discuss with me, you will be expected
to have identified areas of it, which you think are weaker, or that you think display
misunderstanding. These areas you have identified will form the basis of the discussion.
I will also only read part of the work, e.g. the first page of the report, in such sessions to
give you general guidance on your approach and writing style. Again, you will be told if
you are making spelling and grammar errors, but I will not identify all the corrections you
need to make - you must carefully proof read yourself.
Please do not email drafts of work to me and expect feedback by return. Feedback is
given in face-to-face meetings. You get the most out of feedback when you engage in
one-to-one or group discussion. Do not leave such conversations until the last minute
and do not expect to be able to arrange such a meeting with your tutor at less than a
week’s notice. If such a meeting has been arranged the tutor may suggest that material
is emailed to her/him beforehand.

Final feedback on submitted work

It is Waltham International College and Leeds Trinity University policy that all
students receive feedback and a mark on a piece of work within 20 working days
of it being submitted. Bank Holidays and the closure period over Christmas and New
Year are not working days. So, you will receive your feedback for this assessment on 4th
February 2022. We will then use this feedback in class to help you plan to improve.
Any mark you receive for assessed work will have formal feedback with it. This will help
to explain your mark and give you suggestions as to how you can improve next time.
You should view and download your marked work along with the feedback as soon as
possible after these dates. Our class activities will increase your understanding of
where you can make improvements in the future, especially for your semester two
assessment in this module.
