SURFACE AREA and VOLUME
Surface Area: Cone
A conical tent has a base diameter of 10 meters and a slant height of 13 meters. Find the total surface area of the
tent, including the base, so that you know how much material is needed to make it.

To find the total surface area of the cone, we need:

1. The area of the circular base (bottom of the cone).

2. The lateral surface area (the curved surface).

The formula for the total surface area of a cone is:

Surface Area = π r2 + π r l

where:

 r is the radius of the base.

 l is the slant height of the cone.
 π≈3.14159

Surface Area = πr2+πrl

= π (5)2 + π (5)(13)
= 25π + 65π
= 90π ≈282.74 m2
The total surface area of the tent is approximately 282.74 square meters.
Volume: Cone
A conical tent has a base diameter of 10 meters and a slant height of 13 meters. Find the total volume of the
tent.
Volume = 1/3πr2h

Base diameter = 10m, so the radius is:

diameter
r = = 210 = 5m.
2
Slant height = 13m, which is not the vertical height (h) of the cone. We'll calculate h using the Pythagorean theorem.

The slant height (l), radius (r), and vertical height (h) form a right triangle. Using the Pythagorean theorem:

l 2 = r2 + h2 = h2 = l 2 − r2

Substitute l = 13m and r = 5m

h2 = 132 − 52 = 169 – 25 = 144 = h = ❑√ 144❑ =¿ 12m

Substitute r = 5m, h = 12m into the volume formula:

V = 1/3 π r2 h

= 1/3 π (5)2 (12)

= 1/3 π (25) (12)

= 100 π m3

V = 314.16 m3

The total volume of the conical tent is: 314.16 m3

Surface Area: Pyramid
A square pyramid has a base length of 10 meters and a slant height of 15 meters. Calculate the total surface area
of the pyramid.

To find the surface area of a square pyramid, we need:

1. The area of the square base.

2. The lateral surface area (the area of the four triangular faces).

The formula for the total surface area of a square pyramid is:

Surface Area = Base Area + Lateral Surface Area

Step 1: Calculate the base area

Since the base is a square with side length 10 meters, the area of the base is:

Base Area=side2 =102 = 100 m2

Step 2: Calculate the lateral surface area

Each triangular face has a base (same as the side length of the square base) of 10 meters and a slant height of 15
meters. The area of one triangular face is:

Area of one triangle = 1/2 × base × slant height = ½ × 10 × 15 = 75 m2

Since there are four triangular faces, the total lateral surface area is:

Lateral Surface Area = 4×75=300 m2

Step 3: Add them together for the total surface area

Total Surface Area = Base Area + Lateral Surface Area

= 100 + 300
= 400 m2
Volume: Pyramid
Volume = 1/3 × Base Area × Height

Base length (b) = 10m, so the base area is:

Base Area = b2 = 102 = 100m2

Slant height (l) = 15m, which is not the vertical height (h). We'll calculate h using the Pythagorean theorem.

Surface Area: Cylinder
A water tank is shaped like a cylinder with a radius of 4 meters and a height of 10 meters. Calculate the total
surface area of the tank so that it can be painted on the outside.

To find the surface area of a cylinder, we need to calculate:

1. The area of the two circular bases (top and bottom).

2. The lateral surface area (the curved side).

The formula for the total surface area of a cylinder is:

Surface Area = 2 π r2 + 2 π r h

Step 1: Calculate the area of the two circular bases

Each circular base has an area of πr2 Since there are two bases, the total area of the bases is:

2 π r2 = 2 π (4)2 = 2 π (16) = 32π ≈ 100.53 m2

Step 2: Calculate the lateral surface area

The lateral surface area, which wraps around the sides, is calculated by 2πrh:

2πrh = 2 π (4) (10) = 80π ≈ 251.33 m2

Step 3: Add them together for the total surface area

Total Surface Area = 32π + 80π

= 112π
≈ 351.86 m2

The total surface area of the cylindrical water tank is approximately 351.86 square meters.

Volume: Cylinder

The formula for the volume of a cylinder is:

Volume = π r2 h
= π (4)2 10
= π (16) (10)
= 160 π m3
≈ 160 × 3.1416

= 512.65 m3
Surface Area: Sphere

A spherical balloon has a radius of 7 cm. What is the surface area of the balloon?

To find the surface area of a sphere, we use the formula:

Surface Area = 4 π r2

Step 1: Substitute the radius into the formula

Using r = 7 cm, we can calculate the surface area:

Surface Area = 4 π (7)2 = 4 π (49) = 196π

Step 2: Multiply to find the approximate value

Now, we can approximate the value of π\piπ as 3.14159 to calculate the surface area:

196π ≈ 196 × 3.14159 = 615.75 cm2

The surface area of the spherical balloon is approximately 615.75 square centimeters.

Surface Area: Cube

A gift box is shaped like a cube with each side measuring 8 cm. What is the total surface area of the box?

To find the surface area of a cube, we use the formula:

Surface Area = 6 s2

Step 1: Substitute the side length into the formula

Using s = 8 cm, we can calculate the surface area:

Surface Area = 6 × (8)2 = 6 × 64 = 384 cm2

The total surface area of the cube-shaped gift box is 384 square centimeters.

Volume: Cube
Volume = s3
= 83

= 512 cm3

Surface Area: Prism

A storage box has a rectangular prism shape with a length of 12 cm, a width of 8 cm, and a height of 5 cm. Calculate the
total surface area of the box.

To find the surface area of a rectangular prism, we need to calculate the area of all six faces. The formula for the
total surface area of a rectangular prism is:

Surface Area=2lw+2lh+2wh

Step 1: Calculate each pair of opposite faces

1. Top and bottom (each with area lw):

2 l w = 2 × (12) (8) = 2 × 96 = 192 cm2

2. Front and back (each with area lh):

2lh = 2 × (12) (5) = 2 × 60 = 120 cm2

3. Left and right sides (each with area wh):

2wh =2 × (8) (5) = 2 × 40 = 80 cm2

Step 2: Add them together for the total surface area

Total Surface Area = 192 + 120 + 80 = 392 cm2

Volume: Prism
Volume = Length × Width × Height

= 12 × 8 × 5

= 96 × 5

= 480 cm3
