Significant

figure
Example
Round 4,853 to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000.
485|3 to the nearest 10 is 4,850
48|53 to the nearest 100 is 4,900
4|853 to the nearest 1,000 is 5,000
Example
Round 76,982 to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000.
7698|2 to the nearest 10 is 76,980
769|82 to the nearest 100 is 77,000
76|982 to the nearest 1,000 is 77,000
Learning objective

To understand How to
what significant determine
figures are. significant figure.
Significant
figures
Significant figures are figures
that give information about the
size of the place value.
1. All non- zero digits are
significant.

Rules to 2. Any zeros between significant

significant digits are significant.
numbers
3. Trailing zeros to the right of the
decimal point are significant.
General Rule for Zeros
Zeros between non-zero digits (e.g., 205) are
significant.
Trailing zeros (zeros at the end of a number) are only
significant if there is a decimal point (e.g., 320.0 has 4
significant figures).
Leading zeros (zeros before non-zero digits, like 0.034) are
not significant.
Example 1
Round 53,879 to 1 significant figure and then to 2 significant figure ?
1 significant figure- 5 3879- 50,000
2 significant figure- 53879- 54,000
Example 2
Round 0.005089 to 1 significant figure and 2 significant figure.
1. 1 Sig. figure- 0.005 089- 0.005
Note- zeros after a decimal but before a non- zero number are not significant.
2. 2 sig. figure – 0.0050 89 – 0.0051
Note – zeros between two non- zero numbers are significant.
Examples 3
1. Round 742,396 to four significant figure
Solution : 7423 96 = 742,400
2. 742,396 ( three significant figure)
Solution: 742 396 = 742,000
Example 4
1. Round 0.07284 to four significant figure
Solution: 0.07284 = 0.07284

2. 0.07284 to three significant figure

Solution : 0.0728 4 = 0.0728
Example 5
0.005089 round to 1 sig. Figure, 2 sig, figure and 3 sig. Figure?
One significant figure = 0.005
Two significant figure = 0.0051
Three significant figure = 0.00509
Example 6
Round off 98347 to 1 sig, figure, 2 sig. figure and 3 sig. figure?
1 sig. figure – 9 8347 = 100,000
2 sig. figure – 98 347 = 98,000
3 sig. figure – 983 47 = 98300
Example 7
Round off 3.5175 to 1 sig. figure, 2 sig.figure and 3 sig.figure?

1 sig. figure 3. 5175 = 4

2 sig. figure 3.5 175 = 3.5
3 sig. figure 3.51 75 = 3.52
Activity
Choose two different whole numbers and two different
decimal numbers.
For each number: Round it to 1 significant figure, 2 significant figures, and 3
significant figures. Show your working and explain each step you take.
