Problem Set in Statistics for BSES

Instruction: Show your solution

1. Gacs and Ferraroli reported a new method for monitoring 𝑆𝑂2 in air. They compare their method with the standard
method by sampling and analyzing urban air from single location.

Standard method: 21.62 22.20 24.27 23.54 24.25 23.09 21.02

New method: 21.54 20.51 22.31 21.30 24.62 25.72 21.54

a. Using an appropriate statistical test, determine whether there is any significant difference between the standard and
new methods at 95% confidence level.
b. Apply an appropriate statistical test to determine which method gives a more precise result.

2. Find the 95% confidence intervals for the mean mass of nitrogen from chemical sources
in Table 4-3. Use Table 4.2 in your handouts for values of 𝑡 at 95% confidence limit.

3. The following values were obtained using new analytical method for determining the concentration of magnesium: 0.129,
0.133, 0.136, 0.130, 0.128 and 0.131 wt %. Complete the table for required information.

Required quantity value Required quantity value

4. It is known from many careful measurements that the concentration of magnesium in a material is 0.137 wt %. Your new
analytical procedure gives values of 0.129, 0.133, 0.136, 0.130, 0.128 and 0.131 wt %.
a. Do your results differ from the expected result at the 95% confidence level?
b. Verify if 0.136 is an outlier.
