i) Standard error (Type 1 and Type 2)
ii) Statistical Hypothesis.
iii) Critical region of Statistical test.
iv) Test of Significance.
2 Define
i) Null Hypothesis.
ii) Alternative Hypothesis.
iii) Level of significance.
iv) Two tailed test.
v) Statistic.
3 A coin is tossed 1000 times and head turns up 540 times. Decide on the hypothesis
that the coin is unbiased at 1% level of significance.

4 A coin was tossed 400 times and head turned up 216 times. Test the hypothesis that
the coin is un biased at 5% level of significance.

5 A die was thrown 9000 times and a throw of 5 or 6 was obtained 3240 times. On the
assumption of random throwing, do the data indicate an unbiased die at 1% level of
significance.?

6 One type of air craft is found to develop engine trouble in 5 flights out of a total of
100 and another type in 7 flights out of a total of 200 flights. Is there a significance
difference in the two types of air craft’s so far as engine defects are concerned? Test
at 5% significance level.

7 In a city A 20 % of a random sample of 900 school boys had a certain slight physical
defect. In another city B, 18.5% of a random sample of 1600 school boys had the
same defect. Is the difference between the proportions significant at 5% significance
level

8 In a sample of 600 men from a certain city, 450 are found smokers. In another sample
of 900 men from another city, 450 are smokers. Do the indicate that the cities are
significantly different with respect to the habit of smoking among men. Test at 5%
significance level.

9 A sample of 200 screws from machine A showed that 15 were defective while
a sample of 100 screws from machine B showed 12 are defective. Find 99%
confidence interval for the difference in proportion of defective screws from
machine A and B.

10 A random sample of 400 items is found to have a mean of 82 and the standard
deviation of 18. Find 95% confidence limits for the mean of the population
from which the sample is drawn.

11 A sample of 200 tyres is taken from a lot. The mean life of tyres is found to be
40,000 kms. with a S.D of 3200 kms.Is it reasonable to assume the mean life
of tyres in the lot of 41000 kms.? Also establish 95% confidence limits within
which the mean life of tyres in the lot is expected to lie.

12 The mean life time of a sample of 100 fluorescent light bulbs produced by a
company is computed to be 1570 hours with SD of 120 hours. If u is the life
time of all bulbs produced by the company test the hypothesis u=1600 hours
against the alternative hypothesis u\ne1600 hours using a level of significance
of 0.01.

13 A random sample of 100 recorded deaths in past year showed an average life
span of 71.8 years. Assuming a population S.D of 8.9 years, does the data
indicate that the average span today is greater than 70 yrs? Use 0.05 level of
significance.

14 A Sample of 100 bulbs produced by a company showed a mean life of 1190

hrs and S.D of 90 hrs Also a sample of 75 bulbs produced by a company B

showed a mean life of 1230 hrs and a S.D of 120 hrs .Is there a difference
between the mean life of the bulbs produced by the two companies at
i) 5% level of significance ii) 1% level of significance

15 A random sample of 1000 workers in a company has mean wage of Rs.50 per
day and S.D of Rs 15. Another sample of 1500 workers from another
company has mean wage of Rs. 45 per day and S.D. of Rs. 20. Does the mean
rate of wages varies between the two companies ? Find the 95% confidence
limits for the difference the mean wages of the population of the two
companies.

16 In an examination given to students at a large number of different schools the

mean grade was 74.5 and S.D grade was 8. At one particular school where
200 students took the examination the mean grade was 75.9. Discuss the
significance of this result at both 5% and 1% level of significance

17
In an Exit poll enquiry it was revealed that 600 voters in one
Locality and 400 voters from other Locality favored 55% and 48%
respectively .A particular party come to power.test the hypothesis
that there is a difference in locality in respect of opinion at % level
of significance.
