Objectives:
- Students will understand the different units of time: seconds, minutes, hours, and days.
- Students will learn how to read a traditional clock and interpret the time displayed.
- Students will practice converting between different units of time.
Materials Needed:
- Whiteboard and markers
- A traditional wall clock or a clock model
- Handouts with clock faces and time conversion problems
- Stopwatch or timer
- Video clip from Math Antics (optional)
Lesson Outline:
Introduction (10 minutes)
1. Engage the Students:
- Start with a question: "How do we measure time in our daily lives?"
- Discuss responses and write key points on the whiteboard.
2. Reading a Clock:
- Demonstrate how to read the hour, minute, and second hands on a clock.
- Explain the significance of the 12-hour cycle and introduce AM and PM.
- Use the clock model to show examples:
- Point to different times and ask students to identify them.
Closing (5 minutes)
1. Review Key Concepts:
- Ask students to share one thing they learned about measuring time.
- Highlight the importance of being able to read a clock and understand time in daily life.
2. Exit Ticket:
- Have students write down one question they still have about time measurement or clock
reading.
Assessment:
- Monitor student participation during discussions and activities.
- Review the completed worksheets for understanding of time conversion and clock reading.
- Collect exit tickets to gauge remaining questions and areas needing clarification.
Extensions:
- For students who finish early, provide additional clock reading challenges or have them create
