Linux Project and Virtualization

Have you previously used virtualization tools?

I would not say I had previously used virtualization tools. Rather I learned
miscellaneous methods to do things via UCertify. Outside of UCertify I had no
previous experience in using virtualizations.

If not, what are your observations?

Based on my own observation, virtualization tools look rather odd. It is definitely
something that takes time to get used to and requires a thorough understanding of
what you want to do, before you can successfully do so. There is no “clicking
around” to figure stuff out. In fact I realized that it is better to avoid testing
various tasks just to see how it works. It is better to use some sort of reference
tool to help guide you along the way. Reversing whatever changes you made as a
result of exploring, can become a daunting task.

How do you think virtualization might be helpful?

Reduced expenses
● Virtualization costs are typically lower than the cost of buying and maintaining
additional hardware.
Resiliency
● A virtualized server is not bound to specific hardware, as we are used to. VMs
allow for easy back ups, copies and clones to be made for different physical
hardware. And the deployment through VM can be done in a fraction of the time
compared to deploying all new hardware
High availability
● Virtualization offers a reliable system with no single point of failure in the
hardware or software.
● Meaning you can remotely monitor, configure, and restart you entire virtual
environment using other hardware regardless of how far away you may be.
Increased Efficiency
● Virtualization allows you to configure, monitor and also update all of your VMs
from one single machine.
● This means there is less physical hardware to deal with. And an IT team will save a
lot of time by not needing to maintain physical machines.

Development
● Virtualization offers on-demand access to an unlimited amount of replicated
virtual machines for developers to play around with.
● VMs are a safe place for developers to implement development, testing, and
deployment.
Energy Efficiency
● Using virtualization means using less machines.
● Reducing hardware requirements also reduces power consumption, which is both
energy efficient and environment friendly.

Have you run into issues so far?

The only issues I have encountered would involve the installation process. I have
learned how to use various virtualization tools but installing them on my own
personal computer was not something I was confident in doing.

What questions do you have about virtualization?

Regarding virtualization tools… I would like to know how and why people choose
one type over another. For example, choosing between VMware, VirtualBox and
HyperV. What is usually the driving factor in choosing which is preferable?
