Problem Set № 7

Geometric Design of Highways

Vertical Alignment (II)
1- A crest vertical curve with a total length= 1200 ft is being designed to connect between a +4 %
grade and a -3 % grade. It is required to determine the level each 50 ft. along the curve length if
the level of the VPC point is 150.0 ft. Also, calculate the vertical curve curvature and the location
and level of the highest point on it.

2- A sag vertical curve with a total length= 800 ft is being designed to connect between a -3.5 %
grade and 0 % grade. It is required to determine the level each 50 ft. along the curve length if the
level of the VPT point is 210.0 ft. Also, calculate the vertical curve curvature and the location and
level of the lowest point on it.

3- For problem number 1, if you are asked to shift the location of the highest point on the crest curve
towards the VPC point by 35 ft., what kind of adjustment on the design you would suggest keeping
the vertical curve length unchanged, and what is the level of the highest point after the shift.

4- For problem number 2, if you are asked to locate the lowest point on the sag vertical curve exactly
under the VPI point, what sort of adjustment you would suggest on the design keeping the vertical
length of the curve unchanged, and what is the new level of the lowest point on the sag curve.

5- A -4 % grade and a +1 % grade meeting at station (24+40) and level 2440.0 ft. are joined by an
800 ft. vertical curve. the curve passes under an over pass at station (25+00). If the lowest elevation
of the overpass is 2455.5 ft. Calculate the available clearance.

6- A +3.5 % grade and a -1.5 % grade meeting at station (37+45) and level 240.0 ft. are joined by an
1100 ft. vertical curve. The curve passes over an under path with its center line located at station
(38+85). If the under-path highway consists of three lanes in each direction [lane width = 12 ft.]
and a median= 24 ft. If (the critical clearance should be taken= 16 ft., determine the pavement level
of the under-path highway.

7- For problem number 6, assume that the pavement level of the under-path highway is 218.0 ft.
You are asked lo check the availability of the critical clearance= 16 ft. If it is not achieved, and you
are free to shift the station of the CL, what would be the nearest distance from the VPC point to
achieve the critical clearance requirement?
