Year 3 - 21st June 2024

REFLECTION

This week, there has been a lot of discussion in the classes about the European
Championship football that the children are watching. In maths, the students have worked a
lot with money to add and subtract amounts, and they have learnt how much change they
should get back when paying with a larger amount. It is important to continue practising this
at home with your child.

This week, we were lucky with the weather, allowing us to go outside for the new "Art as a
Window" unit to make observations and draw what we saw in nature. We also learned more
about nature journaling. We learnt to collect and organise the observations with words,
pictures and/or numbers. We found out that students make different observations in nature
and this was interesting to discuss with each other.

The students have all made good progress in reading this year and are now enjoying reading
books at a higher level. They also enjoy reading together or discussing the books. The
Opinion Writing Writing Workshop unit helps to motivate others to read a particular book. The
Year 3 students use good reasons and examples in their writing pieces to recommend the
book to others.

At the end of the school year, there are always students who leave ISH because they are
moving or going to another school. There are also students who are a bit anxious to move up
to Year 4. At the end of the school year, there is a moment scheduled for all the ISH students
to meet their new teachers. If your child is having difficulty with changes related to moving,
changing schools, or moving up a year group, please contact your child's teacher so that we
are aware of this and can support your child.

Finally, we would like to mention that we are organising the end-of-the-year party on Friday
afternoon, July 5th from 12:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., together with the class reps. We hope that
there are enough parents that can help us during the party. The class reps will be in touch
with all the parents soon.

LEARNING NEXT WEEK

Maths Unit Mass & Capacity

The students learn to :

● Measure, compare, add and subtract mass
● Compare volume
● Compare, add and subtract capacity

It would be very helpful if you can discuss the knowledge organiser with
your child. You can translate the words in the home language of your child.
We also recommend giving your child opportunities to use a scale or to use
different types of measuring containers or cups at home. Here is an example
of one of the activities:

Language Arts Writing Workshop - Opinion Writing

In Writing Workshop, your child will:
● Choose a book they want to honour with an award and will rehearse
that award, making a claim and listing reasons.
● Revise book awards that they have written.

Reading Workshop
In Reading Workshop, your child will:

● Use the reading strategy of determining importance.

● Build their comprehension skills through summarising what they
have read.

Social Emotional As part of our ‘Spring Fever’ Comprehensive Sexuality Programme (CSE),
Learning the children will become aware of situations in which they may or may not
be naked. They will understand that everyone has a need for privacy and
respect different rules about being naked.

IPC Unit Art as a Window - Environmental Art

This unit is about:

The natural world offers an endless array of subjects and motifs that have
captivated artists across different cultures and time periods.Children will
discover if art is a feeling or a thought or a message? Is it a message from
the artist or a message to an audience?

In this unit we will explore these questions through art and artists that are
inspired by nature and the environment around us. Artists may be inspired
by, and represent living things, natural objects or landscapes, or they may
use natural, found objects to make art. Art in nature may be permanent or
transient, it could be realistic or abstract, it could be 2D or 3D.

Discovering art in nature and nature in art may encourage us to care about
and make a connection to our world and our surroundings and protect it for
the future.

We have started a nature art journal in our IPC lessons where children will have lots
of opportunity to work with different art materials and next week our focus will be:
● Comparison
● Zooming in to add details
● Sensory art experiences

This IPC unit has some particularly tricky subject vocabulary. It would be
very beneficial if you could pre-teach some of the following words and help
your child to translate them to their home language:

nature, artist, art, art medium, sketches, landscape, perspective,

observation, lines, shapes, tone, form

HOME LEARNING

Reading - Please remember to read every night with your child for 15-20 minutes. You can
send home reading books back to school to be changed as often as required, but please
insist that they change books regularly (2 times a week - on Monday and Thursday) as it is
crucial that every child reads as much as possible in Year 3 to improve their reading, retelling
and reading comprehension skills.

Reading - Bug Club - Please login to www.activelearnprimary.co.uk to access the online

reading program Bug Club and enjoy further reading with your child. You will find your child’s
login details in their blue folder.

Maths - Mathletics
Your child has received the Mathletics username and password for Maths home learning.
Please click on the link for the Mathletics website or you can download or use the Mathletics
