DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS

LIMIT OF A FUNCTION
REVIEWER

Limit of a Function
 The limit of a function (f) as (x) approaches (a) is L, denoted
by

lim ( fx )=l if and only if any ε > 0 , there exists a δ >0 such that wherever

0<| x−a|< δ , then |f ( x ) −L|<ε

x →a

 The epsilon-delta definition of limits says that the limit of f(x)

at x=c is L if for any ε>0 there's a δ>0 such that if the
distance of x from c is less than δ, then the distance of f(x)
from L is less than ε. This is a formulation of the intuitive
notion that we can get as close as we want to L

Proof that lim

x →2
3=6 : Scratch Works:

a= 2 ; f(x) = 3x ; L = 6 |x−2|< δ → |3 x−6|<ε

3|x−2|< 3 δ δ∨∆−Delta

|3 x−6|<3 δ ∃−there ∃

Take: ε = 3 δ or δ = ε /3
Proof: Given ε > 0, ∃ δ>0 such that when |x−2|< δ and δ = ε /3, then
|x−2|< δ
|x−2|< ε /3
3|x−2| ε
|3 x−6| ε

PROPERTIES OF LIMIT

1. Limit of a Constant

 The limit of a constant is equal to the constant itself. lim

x →a
c=c

Example:
1. lim 5=5 2. lim 143=143
x→ 2 x→ 6

2. Limit by Direct Substitution

 The limit of the function can be obtained by direct

substitution lim f (x )=f (a)

Example:
x →a

2 2
1. lim ( x ) =5 =25 2. lim ( 2 x−1 )= ( 2 ( 6 )−1 ) =12−1=11
x→ 5 x→ 6

3. Limit of Sum & Difference

 The limit of a sum/difference is equal to the sum/difference

of the limits. lim

x →a
[ f ( x )± g(x )] =¿ lim f (x )± lim g (x)¿
x→ a x→ a

Example:

1. lim x +5=¿ ¿ lim x + lim 5 = (2)2+5=4+5=9

2 2
x→ 2 x →2 x →2

2. lim x +8=¿ ¿ lim x −lim 8 = ( 4)3- 8=64 – 8 =56

3 3
x→4 x→ 4 x→4

4. Limit of a Product

“ Si Crushei ay parang isang sagot sa Math Problem, HINDI KO MAKUHA” – Kaito

 The limit of a product is equal to the product of the limits.
lim ¿ ¿
x →a

Example:

1. lim 5 x =¿ ¿ (lim 5)(lim x ) = (5)(2)2= (5)(4)=20

2 2
x→ 2 x →2 x→ 2

5. Limit of a Quotient

 The limit of a quotient is equal to the quotient of the limit,

provided that the denominator is not zero. lim

lim f (x )
f (x) x →a
=
x →a g(x ) lim g( x )
x→a

Example:
lim 3 x +7 lim 3 x+7
x→ (−1 ) x →(−1) 4
1. ¿ = =−2
2x lim 2 x −2
x→(−1 )

6. Limit of a Radical

 The limit of the nth root of a function is equal to the nth root
of the limit of a function. lim √ f (x )= lim f (x )

n n
x →a x→ a

Example: Solution A Solution B

= = x−4 ∙
1. lim √ x−2 √ x−2 √ x−2 √ x+ 2
x→4 4 ( √ x ) −22 √ x+ 2

= =
√ x−2 2
( √ x) −2 2
2
( √ x) −22 (x−4)( √ x+ 2)

= ( x−2)( x+2) = ( x−4)( x+ 2)

√ x−2 (x−4)
√ √ √

= 2+ 2 = 4
1 1 1 1
¿ =
2+ 2 4

7. Limit of Infinity

 The limit of n , where is a constant and n > 0 as x

c
x

approaches to infinity is zero. x → an =0
