An environment is the total sum of all the living and non-living
elements and their effects that influence human life, these may include the air, water, soil, climate, plants, animals, and other living organisms within a particular area.
Sanitation refers to all interventions which aim to protect and promote
human health by providing a clean environment and breaking the cycle of disease. It includes the principles and practices relating to the collection, treatment, removal or disposal of human excreta, household wastewater and refuse.
A system is a group of interacting or interrelated elements that act
according to a set of rules to form a unified whole.
An environmental sanitation system refers to a comprehensive framework
of policies, infrastructure, practices, and regulations designed to promote public health by ensuring clean and healthy living conditions while minimizing environmental pollution and degradation.
This system typically encompasses various components aimed at
managing waste, controlling pollution, and promoting hygiene within communities. Key elements of an environmental sanitation system may include:
1. Solid Waste Management: This involves the collection,
transportation, and proper disposal of solid waste. It includes activities like garbage collection, recycling, and landfill management. Effective solid waste management helps prevent pollution and maintain cleanliness in communities. From the picture, a lot of plastic, polythene bags, basket, paper, rust metal and spoiled cars are seen in the surrounding environment yet people are continuously carrying out there day to day activities. This leads to air pollution, water and soil contamination thus causing disease to the people. 2. Wastewater Disposal: Sanitation systems include processes for treating both water and wastewater. Water treatment ensures that drinking water is safe for consumption by removing contaminants. Wastewater treatment processes remove pollutants from sewage and industrial effluents before they are released into the environment. From the picture, a lot of solid waste is seen present in and around the drainage which has prevented proper movement of the waste water. This leads to the collection of various germs that spread disease to the people residing in the area. 3. Poor Drainage management. Poor drainage system s can cause water to build up and not be able to drain away. From the picture, the presence of solid waste in the drainage system has prevented the waste water from moving properly. This brings about air pollution to the surrounding and spreads disease if continuously exposed to. 4. Food sanitation refers to the operations that help create a clean working environment by keeping any equipment, contact surface, and the whole facility clean and free from common food hazards. From the picture, there is presence of a bread stand near the solid waste, a man spraying without PPE and waste water drainage. This could lead to various contaminants coming into contact with the bread which will affect the consumer.
5. Hazardous-waste management (Industrial Waste Treatment) is
the collection, treatment, and disposal of waste material that, when improperly handled, can cause substantial harm to human health and safety or to the environment.
6. Regulatory framework: Implementation of regulations, standards,
and policies to govern environmental sanitation practices, ensure compliance with health and safety standards, and enforce penalties for violations.
