Cebu
Cebu is the oldest settlement established by the Spaniards and the second
most important metropolitan center of the Philippines. Before the Spaniards came,
our Visayan ancestors were into silver and gold jewelry making. Jewelry making in
Cebu could be one of the oldest in the world. Cebuano jewelry makers were noted
for their spiral and floral designs.
The city is known for “puso” or hanging rice. It is made by weaving palm leaves
where in rice grains are put inside before it is being cooked.
Cebu has been named as the “Furniture Capital of the Philippines” because
it has been the leading exporter of world-class furniture in Southeast Asia. Cebu
artists such as Vito Selma and Debbie Palao use rattan and other experimental
materials to make unique and stylish furniture and fixtures for elegant living. A
world-class Filipino furniture designer, Kenneth Cobonpue, makes Cebu’s furniture
famous.
Other local artists used other indigenous materials such as coconut shells,
shells, bariw, capiz, and wood.
Guitars from Cebu are also popular in many parts of the country because of its
unique blend of sound, craftsmanship and durability.

Cebu’s other exports include: fashion accessories, guitars, dried mangoes,
carrageenan, gifts, toys, watches, camera, electronic components, and
housewares.
BOHOL
Bohol is known for its beautiful sceneries, exotic foods, rare animals, old
churches, and basketry. The Philippine tarsier, which is considered to be the
smallest living primate in the world, the famous Chocolate Hills, and the white sand
of Panglao beach are only some that can be associated with the province.
Basketry is among the earliest industries that have been established in the
town of Antequera where most of the weavers are women. It has been the town’s
industry for several years which earned them the title “Basket Capital of Bohol”.
Their products are made from bamboo, rattan, wicker, nito, buri, sig-id, and other
vines or whatever is readily available. Sig-id is a big basket or wide-mouthed
container with big “eyelets” and about one meter in height which was made from
the splits of bamboo or rattan.

SIQUIJOR
During the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines, the Spaniards called
the island “Island of Fire” because the island gives off an eerie glow, which came
from the swarm of fireflies that gathered in the numerous molave trees on the island.
Siquijor is known for its festivals that focus on healing rituals where
incantations are sang while the old folks make potions out of herbs, roots, insects
and tree barks. Among the celebrated festivals are the following:
• Solili Festival
- a marriage ritual held in Lazi every September, where parents of the bride
and groom prepare a feast and take turn advising the couple on married
life.
• Dilaab Festival
Held on October 1, to showcase the people’s distinct hospitality and the
ancient name of the island “Isla De Fuego”, because of the swarm of fireflies
at night. The feast also honors St. Francis of Assisi who is known as the
patron saint of animals.

• Healing Festival
Herbalists from Visayas and Mindanao come together to perform healing and
participate in the preparation of concoctions made from a variety of tree
barks, roots, herbs, insects and other ingredients which are gathered during
seven Fridays of the Lenten season from the forests, sea, caves and
cemeteries.
NEGROS ORIENTAL
During the pre-Hispanic times, the island of Negros is called “Buglas” after
the type of grass similar to sugarcane that grows abundantly in the island.
Weaving is an integral part of the lives of the Negrenses. Their weaving
practices include roofing materials, wall, hats and baskets using pandan and buri
leaves. In Valencia, Negros Oriental, sinamay weaving is a world class industry. It
is made from abaca twine and indigenous plants similar to banana. The natural fiber
is dyed, woven and stiffened for the production of hats.
