Education and Modern Technologies

Modern technology has transformed the classroom from teacher centered to student
centered. Not like previous era, both teachers and students have a lot of tools & sources to
present / access the education. Modern technology has had a significant impact on
education in the past 4-3 years, making a significant difference from the previous period.

Smart education is used as an interactive technology that offers a more flexible and tailored
approach to meet diverse individual requirements by being "Sensitive, Manageable,
Adaptable, Responsive and Timely" to students.

1) Modern technology in education

It was revealed that the use of modern technology and its tools, the learning and
interactivity of students increases. They also find it much more interactive, as well as full of
interesting areas, by technology. The transfer of knowledge becomes very easy and
convenient, as well as effective. Today there are a lot of technical sources make a huge
impact on the education such as, Interactive Whiteboards, Virtual reality, AI, Online
collaboration spaces (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google meet, etc. …), Social media
platforms (WhatsApp, Facebook, you tube, etc. …), Internet, etc. …
Use of modern technology in education is completely unavoidable in these days even in
collages, schools, universities, or tuition classes. Students mainly use technology in following
ways,

A. Internet connection and round the clock connectivity to search, make & present.
B. Using projectors, visuals, and AI.
C. Online degrees with the use of technology.

2) Importance of technology in education

As technology becomes more important to modern life, it will naturally become more
important in education too. Millions of students in schools around the world use technology
every day. In educational context, ICT has the potential to increase access to education and
improve its relevance and quality. Such as,

 Active learning:
 Collaborative and Cooperative learning
 Creative Learning:
 Integrative learning - Eliminating the separation between theory and practice.
 Evaluative learning - Learning is student-centered
3) Positive impact of technology in education

A) Enhanced Teaching and Learning:

Teachers and students have a lot of tools & sources to teach, search, learn & train like
Internet, digital cameras, projectors, mind training software, computers, Power point
presentations, 3D visualization tools, Smart boards, etc. …

Visual explanation makes learning fun and enjoyable for students. They can participate
more in the classroom and teachers can make their classes more interesting and
interactive.

B) Globalization:

Students and teachers can interact / meet their counterparts without leaving the
classroom, even when they are in different states.

C) No Geographical Limitations:

With online education programs no need to present physically in the classroom.

D) Students can access huge information.

E) Facilitates and enhances learning.

F) It helps students to develop their minds

4) Negative impact of technology in education

A) Declining Writing Skills:

Due to the excessive usage of online chatting the writing skills of the children have been
declined quiet tremendously

B) Increasing Incidents of Cheating:

Things like graphical calculators, high tech watches, mini cameras and similar equipment
same as these have become a great source to cheat in the exam.

C) Lack of Focus:

SMS or text massages has become a favorite pastime of students. Students are seen
playing with their cell phones and iPhones day and night

D) It makes students lazy and kills their creativity:

Students who are always into using technology, such as smartboards or computers, may
become too reliant on it and not develop unique ideas.

E) Misinformation that misguides students

Misinformation can de huge negative impact of technology on students. Misinformation

is incorrect or misleading information that can misguide students and affect their learning.
F) Affect the Physical and Mental Health of the Students:

Excessive use of technology can lead to many different problems eyestrain, difficulty
focusing on important tasks, and other physical issues.

It also can affect the mental health by causing anxiety, depression, addiction, and other
physical issues.

5) Potential challenges of digital learning.

We can identify few main potential challenges of digital learning like,

A) Disengagement.
Teachers need to attend to students’ different capabilities with technology to avoid
disengagement because of a lack of experience or confidence.

B) Teacher training.
Teachers may also find it difficult to use certain technology or adapt their teaching
methods to get the most out of it.

C) Resources.
Not everyone has access to the same resources for digital learning. Availability of
technical resources may significantly impact on the learning outcome of the students.

In conclusion, technology has both positive and negative impacts on students. The positive
effects include enhancing the learning process, increasing engagement, and improving
retention of information.

However, there are also negative effects such as over-reliance on technology leading to less
time spent on actual learning. It is important for educators and parents to find a balance
between utilizing technology to enhance education while also being mindful of its potential
drawbacks.

Ultimately, the key is to use technology in a way that maximizes its benefits while
minimizing its negative impacts.
