- There are two kinds of nouns in English, countable ( C ) and uncountable (U).

C =things you can count e.g. apples. C nouns can be singular (an apple) or plural
(apples)

U =things you can't count.

butter, meat NOT two meats, three betters.


U nouns are usually singular.

- Some nouns can be C or U, but the meaning is different.

• We use there is/ there are to say that somebody or something exists.
- There is+ singular nouns
- There are+ plural nouns
• When we talk about a list of things, we use there is if the first word in the list is singular,
there are if the first word in the list is plural.
• Ex: in my bedroom, there's a bed, two chairs, and a desk.
in the living room, there are two armchairs and a sofa.
