SFE Energy Texas, Inc. Public Service Notice
April 2022
Involuntary Load Shedding and Consumer Reductions in Energy Usage
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) manages the flow of power across the electric grid in order to ensure that the supply of
power is sufficient to meet consumer demand. At times, consumer demand for power exceeds the supply of power. Under these conditions,
prior to directing Transmission and Distribution Utilities (TDUs) to implement customer outages, ERCOT will often seek to reduce consumer
demand by directing TDUs to implement load shedding procedures. Your TDU’s involuntary load shedding procedures can be found at
https://www.sfeenergy.com/texas/commercial
Consumers may also want to consider reducing electricity use at times when involuntary load shedding events may be implemented. The Public
Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) has many general recommendations for consumers on how to reduce electricity use, as well as specific
recommendations for saving energy during hot weather and cold weather. These recommendations are available on the PUC website at:
http://www.puc.texas.gov/consumer/facts/Save.aspx
Critical Care Residential Customers, Chronic Condition Residential Customers, Critical Load Industrial

➢ Critical Care Residential Customer – If you are a residential customer who has a person permanently residing in your home who has
been diagnosed by a physician as being dependent on an electric-powered medical device to sustain life, you may apply to be designated
as a Critical Care Residential Customer. To apply, the Commission-approved application form must be submitted to the TDU by a
physician. This designation is effective for a two-year period.
➢ Chronic Condition Residential Customer – If you are a residential customer who has a person permanently residing in your home who
has been diagnosed by a physician as having a serious medical condition that requires an electric-powered medical device or electric
heating or cooling to prevent the impairment of a major life function through a significant deterioration or exacerbation of the person’s
medical condition, you may apply to be designated as a Chronic Condition Residential Customer. To apply, the Commission-approved
application form must be submitted to the TDU by a physician. This designation is effective for a period of at least 90 days or up to one
year, dependent upon the nature of the medical condition.
➢ Critical Load Industrial Customer – If you are an industrial customer for whom an interruption or suspension of electric service will
create a dangerous or life-threatening condition on your premises, you may apply to be designated as a Critical Load Industrial Customer.
To apply, you must notify the TDU. Eligibility for the designation will be determined through a collaborative process between the
customer, TDU and REP.
➢ Critical Load Public Safety Customer – If you are a customer for whom electric service is considered crucial for the protection or
maintenance of public safety, such as hospitals, police and fire stations, you may apply to be designated as a Critical Load Public Safety
Customer. To apply, you must notify the TDU. Eligibility for the designation will be determined through a collaborative process between
the customer, TDU and REP.
The designation as a critical load customer, critical care residential customer or chronic condition residential customer does not guarantee the
uninterrupted supply of electricity.
The PUC’s Application for Chronic Condition or Critical Care Residential Customer Status is available at:
