Introduction
• Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm
– Connects different sensors to the global Internet for
exchanging data.
• Cloud
– The fundamental computing paradigm to deal with
distributed IoT devices.
• When a large number of IoT devices simultaneously
transferring the data to Cloud datacenters:
– Network congestion occurs.
– To overcome these limitations of Cloud-centric IoT model, Fog
and Edge computing paradigms are emerged.
• Prefer to utilize edge resources for executing real-time IoT
applications
Why Fog and Edge Computing?
• Both the fog and edge are totally concerned and
looks into the computing capabilities to be
leveraged locally than pushing it to the cloud.
• Both aim at reducing the complete dependency
on the cloud to do the computation.
• Reduce the time delay incurred in the decision
making because the data is pushed on to the
cloud.
• The data driven decisions shall be much faster
and is to be achieved for crucial real-time
applications
Fog Computing
• Fog computing
– An intermediate layer
between IoT enabled
systems and Cloud
computing.
• Fog nodes
– The computing instances
of Fog computing
– Fog nodes are
heterogeneous.
Advantages of Fog Computing
• Low latency and drastic reduction in amount of
data that is sent to the cloud.

• System security is improved in addition to better

privacy since the data resides close to the host

• Improves scope for real time application and

reduces the response time of the system. This
results in enhancing user experience
Edge Computing
• The main difference is at where the data processing takes place
• Edge is all about the computing carried out at the devices itself to where the
sensors are all connected.
• Potential edge resources :
– Smart devices with computing processors such as Raspberry Pi devices, personal
computers, mobile phones, network switches, routers and micro-datacenters.
Benefits of Edge Computing
Difference between Fog and Edge
S/N Edge Computing Fog Computing
1 Less scalable than fog computing Highly scalable when compared to
edge computing
2 Billions of nodes are present Millions of nodes are present
3 Nodes are installed far away from the Nodes in this computing are
cloud installed closer to the cloud
4 Edge computing helps devices to get Fog computing helps in filtering
faster results by processing the data important information from the
simultaneously received from the devices massive amount of data collected
from the device and saves it in the
cloud by sending the filtered data

5 The bandwidth requirement is very low. The bandwidth requirement is high.

Because data comes from edge nodes Data originating from edge nodes is
themselves transferred to the cloud
