Safety Precautions
Before attempting to install or use the SMP device, review the safety precautions that are included in the
related SMP device's User Manual.
The following safety precautions are mainly related to the power supplies connections and handling; they
are listed as a reminder to help prevent injury or damage to equipment:
Caution: Only qualified personnel should work on the SMP device. Installation and maintenance
personnel should be familiar with the technology and hazards associated with electrical equipment.

Caution:
The SMP device is a double pole/neutral fusing system: it has a fuse on the Neutral line.
Danger: Connecting the SMP device to a power source that does not respect the power supply
specifications may damage the unit.

Caution:
A switch or circuit-breaker must be included as part of the installation: It must be located in close
proximity to the SMP device and within easy reach of the operator. It must also be marked as the
disconnecting device for the SMP device.
Warning:
Before attempting the installation or maintenance of the SMP device, other than the hot swapping of
the power supply or RAID storage drives, turn off the corresponding power supply equipment.
Warning:
Make sure that the hot-swapping of the power supplies or the storage SSD drives on the SMP
device are performed by qualified personal only.
Note: SSD storage drives are used only with the SMP SC-2200.

Danger:
The power supply terminal block is IP20 finger proof. Direct contact (e.g., using a tool) may cause
electrical shock that can cause injury or death.
Warning:
The SMP device contains devices sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Work surfaces and
the personnel must be grounded before installing or replacing a communication module. The
same recommendation applies if you have to open the SMP device case; however, remember that
opening the case voids the warranty.

1.3 The SMP device bottom panel

The SMP device's bottom panel enclosure is accessible by removing the cover plate which is fixed to the
bottom panel with six (6) screws.
Important: The SMP device must be disconnected from its power source(s) before opening the
bottom panel.

The following figure shows the SMP SC-2200 computing platform bottom panel enclosure (cover plate
removed, one Slim SATA inserted with its ESD shield); the bottom panel enclosure is identical on the SMP
SG-4260 automation platform.

When only one SSD slim SATA drive is installed on the SMP device platform, it must be
placed in the SlimSSD 1 bay.
Note: An optional Slim SATA drive can only installed in the SlimSSD 1 bay on
the SMP SG-4260 automation platform.

Note: This drive bay is not functionnal on the SMP SG-4260 automation
platform.

the SMP device is ordered with the SSD slim SATA drive(s). If a SSD Slim Sata drive
is ordered separatly by the customer, Eaton provides the shield and four (4) screws
together with the drive.

Note: Ordering SSD Slim Sata drives from Eaton ensures that the SMP device stays substation-
grade. A third party drive provides no warranty with respect to the substation-grade compliancy.

Chapter 2: Slim SATA installation

2.1 Installing SSD Slim SATA drives for internal storage

There are two internal storage bays located inside the bottom panel of the SMP device. When you receive
the SMP device, the ordered drives are already installed. However, if you need to change or add a drive,
follow this procedure.

Before you begin:

The SMP SC-2200 is shipped from factory with its operating system installed on the basic Slim SATA
internal drive, installed at the SlimSSD 1 location.

Figure 1: Bottom panel with two Slim SATA drives inserted

(SlimSSD 1 on the right and SlimSSD 2 on the left)

Note: The picture shown in this section does not show the ESD protective covers installed over the
Slim SATA drives. Refer to the bottom panel section for a picture with an installed shield.

• Make sure the SMP device is powered off.

• Wear an antistatic wrist strap and discharge any static electricity by touching a grounded surface.
• If the SMP device is installed in a rack, disconnect all cables from the computer and remove it from the
rack. Place it on a clean work area.
• Remove any plastic, vinyl or foam from the work area.

The installation procedure is simple, it must however be exercised with care to prevent accidental damage
caused by static electricity.
Warning:
The SMP device contains devices sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Work surfaces and
the personnel must be grounded before installing or removing a drive into or from the bottom panel
drive bay. Opening the SMP device's bottom panel does not void the warranty.
Warning:
If you add a drive to the SMP device configuration, its operating temperature will change. For
complete temperature derating information, refer to the device's Catalog Data document.

Instructions:
1. Place the SMP device upside-down on a flat surface and make sure it is grounded.
2. Remove the six (6) screws keeping the bottom panel's protective cover in place.

Chapter 2: Slim SATA installation

3. Remove the protective cover.

4. Unpack the Slim SATA drive from the shipping box.
Warning:
Handle the drive only by its edges and avoid touching the circuitry. Moreover, do not slide
the drive over any surface, and limit body movement (which builds up static electricity) during
installation.
5. Insert the Slim SATA drive into the selected bays:
a) For the SMP SC-2200, SlimSSD 1 is the basic internal storage bay. The operating system is
normally factory installed on the drive that is inserted in this bay.
b) For the SMP SC-2200, SlimSSD 2 is the optional storage bay; it is not used on the SMP SG-4260
automation platform.
Make sure the drive is inserted properly into the bays.
6. The Slim SATA drive ordered from Eaton comes with a protective ESD shield that must be installed
over the drive with the four (4) provided screws, using the provided Phillips #00 screwdriver.
Important: The four (4) screws are already inserted into the shield's four (4) holes and they
stay put. The reason for this is to avoid manipulating these tiny screws over the enclosure;
dropping one of them into the SMP device enclosure may result in the screw falling into the SMP
device case which would be an unfortunate situation, because opening the case would void the
warranty. Call Eaton if such a situation happens.
7. Once the protective shield is installed, replace the cover plate and tighten the six (6) screws.
8. The SMP device can now be re-installed where it belongs, reconnected to its power source(s) and
communication links and finally, powered on.
