Poem Portfolio

By Morgan Cowgill

(9 / 6 / 24) Mrs. Walker 5th period

Wingless Birds
I am a bird without its wings
I wonder why the universe seems so small
I hear the stars when I look out my window at night
I see the invisible paintings in the shadows
I want to fly and feel the wind on my face
I am a bird without its wings

I pretend to know what I am doing

I feel the earth spin under my feet
I touch the surface of the moon in my dreams
I worry that my life is going by too fast and too slow at the same time
I cry for our planet
I am a bird without its wings

I understand that not everyone is given an act in the play

I say that humans are the definition of curiosity
I dream about times that are long lost and forget them again once I
wake up
I try not to stray from the path that I walk
I hope that one day I will understand everything
I am a bird without its wings I Am poem
Wishes

Someday I will be able to share my opinions without worrying

And I will not have to stress about people’s thoughts

Someday I’ll have the motivation

And I’ll pour my soul out onto the words on the screen

Someday I might do something great

And be recognized for my hard work and effort

Someday I will look back as an adult

And miss the memories that used to be my childhood

Someday I will live a full life

But for now, I will wait patiently for that time to come
Someday poem
Seasons
One window is all I need,
To watch the grass turn yellow,
With the promise of fall,
And cool breezes,
That sweep brown leaves,
Into the road.

To feel the hope that swells in my

chest,
When snow dusts the yard,
Even though it only lasts a second,
And the flurry will soon melt,
I rejoice in the magical moment.

To feel the new sprigs,

Under my fingertips,
As I sit in the green grass,
And smile at the sky,

To run through the soccer fields,

The ball at my feet,
And feel the sun beating down on
my back,
As I play with my sisters.
In the end, one window is all I need. One window is all I need poem

Splashes of Color
We Are Our Own World (Translation)

The human body is very similar

To the universe and all of it’s greatness.
For example, the veins that carry life that hide under skin
And lightening that stretches in a flash across the dark sky.
Or the dents and rivets of our skin that cover every inch of you,
Can be found in the patterns that are just vibrations of the earth.
The colors of our eyes will be compared
To all of the shades of the world
In all of its splendor.
Because we are the universe
pretending to be human

Concrete poem
Unforgiving Ocean
Cresting walls of blue ocean and white foam
Water rushes forward, an unstoppable force
Crashing down on the unsuspecting passengers,
As they tremble on their fragile boats
Intricately carved wood and delicate designs

Men and woman cower, hiding their faces

As if that would help them escape the incoming waves
Their helpless screams are cut off
Suddenly and without mercy

The unforgiving ocean continues to rage

Spraying sea foam into the dull azure sky
Birds sing cheerfully to one another
As if the boats were never there in the first place

Ekphrastic poem
Ice Water

O fresh ice water

Thy glacial taste on my tongue
Flavors spring joyfully
As cold as can be

O fresh ice water

Burning my mouth
Your refreshing taste
Brings me much joy

O fresh ice water

Your condensation drips down
Like rain on a window
How gloriously chilled you are

O fresh ice water

I shall sip from thee
During my 3am adventures
How I shall treasure thee

Found poem
Life used to tie me up

But you heroically saved me from my prison

I used to sing softly alone in my makeup

Now I cannot find the key without your vision

The wistful music that is playing again

Flowing with the rhythm of your heartbeat

Dancing and swaying I can’t contain

When you leave, I feel alone and incomplete

I will state the truth that you need so dearly

I ask with unmasked woe

Will you please allow me to join your symphony

Can you hold me close and not let go

Your symphony

Like a soulful love song on the radio

I smile as it plays so slowly

Please hold me close and do not let go
