Quarter 2
Lesson 3: Cell Structure

This time we will discuss the parts and

function of plant and animal cell.

A cell has three basic parts the nucleus,

plasma membrane and cytoplasm.
The Learners will listen
1. Nucleus - is a part of cells which is easily attentively
seen. It control the all the activities of the
other parts that occur within the cell. It also
contains materials that play a role in heredity.

2. Plasma Membrane - encloses the cell and

separates what is inside it from its
environment. It also controls what goes into
and out of the cell. It allows entry of materials
needed by the cell and eliminates those which
are not needed.

3. Cytoplasm - consists of jelly like substance

where all the other parts of the cell are
located.

4. Cell Wall - is made of stiff material that

forms the outermost part of plant cells. It gives
shape and protection.

5. Chloroplast- is important in plant cells

because it is where food is made. It contains
chlorophyll which absorbs energy from the sun
to make food for plants. The learners will listen
attentively
6. Vacuoles- are present in both plants and
animal cells. In plant cells, they are large and
usually occupy more than half of the cell
space. They play role in storing nutrients and
increasing cell size during growth. Some plant
vacuoles contain poisonous substances. It
also store water, thereby maintaining the
rigidity to cells to provide support for plants to
stand upright. It is also responsible for the
crisp appearance of fresh vegetables.

8. Centrioles - are only found in animal cells.

These have a role in cell reproduction.

9. Golgi complex / Golgi apparatus Modifies,

sorts, and packages proteins and lipids for
storage or transport out of the cell.

10. Lysosome Contains digestive enzymes that

break down waste materials, cellular debris,
and foreign invaders like bacteria.

11. Mitochondrion- Known as the powerhouse

of the cell, mitochondria generates most of
the cell's supply of ATP (energy) through
cellular respiration.

12. Rough ER- Studded with ribosomes and

involved in protein synthesis and processing.

13. Ribosomes- Small structures that are the

site of protein synthesis; they can be found
floating freely in the cytoplasm or attached to The Learners will listen
the endoplasmic reticulum. attentively

14. Smooth ER- Lacks ribosomes and is

involved in lipid synthesis and detoxification
processes.

G. Extend The teacher will give a take home activity for

the students to be submitted next meeting.

On an illustration board, draw an illustration of

plant and animal cells. Label its parts. The
criteria are as follows:
Neatness………………………… 30% Correct
Labeling………………… 40% Following the
