Using ATEM

Sample Graphics

February 2023
Using ATEM Graphics Files
Installing ATEM Graphics
Included with the ATEM Software install are some ATEM graphics samples organised into 9
themes in both .png and .psd file formats. The full set of over 450 sample graphics can be
downloaded from the Blackmagic Design website at:
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/developer-dl/atem-graphics-source

PNG Files
The .png files included are for users who are starting out with ATEM’s professional switcher
features. There are many styles of graphics including titles, lower thirds and supersource
frames, so they are great for learning very quickly.
‚ Connect a desktop or laptop to your ATEM switcher.
‚ Load the sample graphics into your ATEM’s media pool using the directory browser panel on
the left hand side of the media page in the ATEM Software Control application.
‚ Or drag and drop files from an external folder directly into the media pool.
‚ Once added to the media pool, drag any graphic you want to use from the media pool to a
media player located in the right side panel in the media page.

PSD Files
The .psd files are multi layered so they can be fully edited in Adobe Photoshop. Change any
part of the graphic then export the modified version to the media pool by using the ATEM
export plug in that is automatically installed into Photoshop when ATEM Software is installed.
Detailed instructions are outlined in the ‘Exporting to ATEM’ section.

Installing Fonts
Various fonts have been used in the different ATEM graphic themes. All are Google Fonts and
are free to install and use. Simply click the weblink to download the font you want to install so
you can edit the text in the Photoshop .psd files.

Editing the PSD Files
You can use the .png files to quickly identify a graphic that might work for your project. To
customize it, simply open the .psd version that has the same file name in Adobe Photoshop and
follow the steps listed below.
The .psd Photoshop files have been constructed in a way that you are able to change every
aspect whether it be text, colour, shape, etc. Every element exists on its own layer so it can
easily be isolated, selected and manipulated. Some layers use layer masks or layer shapes
to control transparency for that layer. This document is not a full Photoshop tutorial, but the
Free Transform command is handy to remember for changing position, size, rotation or scale.
Cmd+T (⌘T) on Mac / Ctrl+T on Windows or:
Menu Bar > Edit > Free Transform

Text
First, you’ll need to download and install the required Google fonts so you can edit the type
layers in the .psd files. See the previous pages in this document that display and specify the
fonts used with download links for each.
Each .psd file has editable layers for text and graphic elements.
All type layers are ‘Lorem Ipsum’ placeholder text, so you can insert your own descriptions.

Installing Fonts 4
Logos
The logo is also on a separate layer so it can be easily replaced, or you can change any of the
elements of the example logo as they are all editable vector shapes.

Graphic Elements
All of the title elements are live vector paths and can be altered to suit your desired type layout.
You can click on the path with either the direct selection or path selection tools and alter the
size, shape, or colour.

Any vector shape colour can be edited easily by double clicking the shape layer and selecting
the new colour in the colour picker.

Installing Fonts 5
Background Layer
The background layer is a vector shape that can be edited and changed to any size, position
or colour. The background pattern is set to screen blending mode and the opacity can be
adjusted to make it more or less prominent.

Windows
Some .psd files include transparent windows in the graphics file for your video backgrounds to
be viewed through. This might be a single window that makes a graphic frame to be used with
one video source, or several windows to be used with the supersource function of ATEM that
displays more than one video source on screen at the same time. All windows in the .psd file
are vector shapes that can be scaled or moved to suit your needs.

With the wide range of graphics files supplied, you should be able to find something to suit your
purpose that you can use or adapt. Once any of the Photoshop elements have been edited in the
.psd file, save a copy of it as a .psd for further editing in the future. To be able to use the graphic
with your ATEM, you need to export it separately as a .png by following these next steps. Files
saved directly from Photoshop can have unwanted artifacts when used with ATEM switchers.

Installing Fonts 6
Exporting to ATEM
ATEM requires the embedded transparent areas in a .png file to be premultiplied with black.
This is not always possible when saving a .png directly from Photoshop. So the best workflow
to create .png files that have correct RGBA values, is to use the ATEM export plug in that is
automatically installed into the Photoshop plug ins folder when ATEM Software is installed.
This plug in can be accessed in the top menu bar of Photoshop under:
File > Export > ATEM Switcher Media Pool…

For frequent Photoshop file exporting directly to ATEM switcher media pool, you can even
allocate a keyboard shortcut to this action using keyboard shortcuts under the Photoshop
edit menu.
A modal window will appear once the Export > ATEM switcher media pool action has been
activated.

If you have previously connected to your switcher, or another switcher, using a different IP
address you will need to update the switcher IP address field with the correct IP address.
The ATEM switcher needs to be connected and turned on for this export method to work.

Installing Fonts 7
You can keep the name of the Photoshop file for the new .png that is created, or rename it using
the name field.
Choose the media pool location for the new exported file using the media pool location
dropdown list. This list will show you how the ATEM switcher’s media pool is currently
configured and choosing a spot that is already populated will overwrite the graphic file in
ATEM’s internal memory.

Always leave pre multiply alpha ticked in the colors setting.

After you have exported the files, other actions can be chosen:
‚ Do nothing will send the exported file to the media pool spot chosen without any
further action.
‚ Set to media player will perform the additional action of sending that file to an ATEM media
player. If that media player is live to air, the graphic will be instantly updated live to air.

Installing Fonts 8
This is very useful for graphics you wish to dynamically update during a live event such as
scores or lower thirds.
‚ Editing the Photoshop .psd will not show live through ATEM, but when the graphic has been
updated and is ready, send it directly to an ATEM Program or AUX output by choosing set to
media player and clicking the export button while having that media player live to air as an
upstream or downstream luma key.
‚ You could keep the .psd graphic open in Photoshop and update a text field of team scores
and keep pushing updated graphic overlays to ATEM very easily right within Photoshop. This
workflow effectively makes any laptop connected to ATEM and running Photoshop, a full
featured live broadcast graphics workstation.

Saving the Media Pool

Different ATEM models have a different number of still images that can be stored in that ATEM’s
internal memory. You might need to clear part or all of the media pool for additional graphics or
a different switching job. So you don’t lose the graphics sent to ATEM using the ATEM switcher
media pool Photoshop plug in, you can save them by using the ‘save as’ command under file in
ATEM Software Control.
ATEM Software Control > File > Save As > Choose a name and drive location to save to.
‚ A saving options window will appear.

‚ For saving only the media pool assets, you can choose the Select None button at the top of
the window and then check the media pool option in the media section.
‚ Click save.
‚ A folder named ATEM media pool will be created in the storage directory location you
chose, and this folder contains all the PNGs from the ATEM’s media pool. These PNGs are
completely compatible with all ATEM switchers for immediate use at any time with no further
processing needed.
