What Information Do I Need To Know?
Dear Cosmina,
Thank you for your application to the CAVC Financial Contingency Fund; you have applied for a Transport for
Wales rail pass.
Please note that this is not an award letter, your application is still being processed. However, should you be
approved for a pass, you will need the information below.
When a learner is awarded a TfW rail pass for the very first time, they are issued with a photocard and a ticket
- there is a matching number printed on both of these parts of the pass, and both parts must be kept and used
together at all times; any learner found to be using the ticket portion of the pass without also having the
photocard portion of the pass with them, is at risk of being fined and banned from being given another train
pass by the College. This is why it is imperative that both parts are kept together at all times.
Cardiff and Vale College are not liable for any fines or charges incurred following the misuse of a College-
issued travel pass.
- To be eligible for travel assistance from the college, you must be studying more than 12 hours a week and live
more than 3 miles away from your chosen campus of study. This is measured using Google Maps set to
walking distance
- Depending on your circumstances, a non-refundable £50 administration fee may be required before your
travel pass can be ordered - we will contact you at a later stage if this is applicable to you
- TFW rail passes are valid every day of the week, but only between the two stations printed on the ticket. This
will be the station closest to your home address as registered with the college, and the station closest to your
main campus of study
- The photocard you are issued with should be kept for the duration of your time at CAVC and must be kept
with your ticket at all times. Tickets are valid for one term at a time; a new ticket will be ordered at the end of
term 1 ready for the start of term 2, and at the end of term 2 ready for term 3. You are expected to make your
own way to college on the first day of each term. No reimbursements will be given for costs incurred whilst
waiting for your pass to arrive.
- You can only have one replacement pass in a 12-month period. All lost passes will incur a £10 replacement
charge.
- If you withdraw from your course or transfer to a course that makes you ineligible for funding, the college
reserves the right to cancel your pass without warning. No reimbursements for the administration fee will be
given in these instances
As explained upon collection of the pass, the photocard you are initially issued with should be kept for the
duration of your time at CAVC; you will be issued a new ticket on a term-by-term basis (including term 1 of the
next academic year if you return to college), and the number printed on this will match the one printed on
your photocard.
If you have misplaced any part of your train pass you will need to order a replacement.
If you have lost your photocard but still have your ticket, you must not use the ticket. You must inform us as
soon as possible so that a new pass can be ordered for you. This will incur a charge of £10.
