collection of devices connected
together in one physical location,
such as a building, office, or home.
A LAN can be small or large.

Personal Area Network (PAN) is a network that
connects computers/devices within the range of an
individual person. As PAN provides a network range
within a person's range typically within a range of 10
meters .

A VLAN is a virtual LAN, a subgroup within a local network.

VLANs make it easy for network administrators to separate


a single switched network into multiple groups to match the
functional and security requirements of their systems.

A wide-area network (WAN) is a
collection of local-area networks (LANs)
or other networks that communicate with
one another. A WAN is essentially a
network of networks, with the Internet the
world's largest WAN.
MAN
Metropolitan Area Network
MAN or Metropolitan area Network covers
a larger area than that covered by a LAN
and a smaller area as compared to WAN.
The main purpose of a MAN is to connect
different LANs in a city to share resources
and exchange data .
VPN
Virtual Private Network
A virtual private network, or VPN, is an
encrypted connection over the Internet from a
device to a network. The encrypted connection
helps ensure that sensitive data is safely
transmitted. It allows the user to conduct work
remotely.
Host Role
PEER-TO-PEER
In peer-to-peer (P2P) networking, a group of
computers are linked together with equal permissions
and responsibilities for processing data. Unlike
traditional client-server networking, no devices in a
P2P network are designated solely to serve or to
receive data.
Client-Server Networks
Client-server networks are computer networks that
use a dedicated computer (server) to store data,
manage/provide resources and control user
access.
The server acts as a central point on the network
upon which the other computers connect to.

A computer that connects to the server is called a


client.
Types of Personal Data
Volunteered data ‫بياناااتطوعيهياا‬- This is created and
explicitly shared by individuals, such as social network
profiles. This type of data might include video files,
pictures, text or audio files.

Observed data ‫بيانااااتطودةاااي‬- This is captured by


recording the actions of individuals, such as location data
when using cell phones.

Inferred data ‫بيانااتطوتاونبع‬- Which is based on analysis of


volunteered or observed data.

There are three common methods of signal
transmission used in networks:

Electrical signals - Transmission is achieved by


representing data as electrical pulses on copper
wire.
Optical signals - Transmission is achieved by
converting the electrical signals into light
pulses.
Wireless signals - Transmission is achieved by
using infrared, microwave, or radio waves
through the air.
Network Media
Throughput and bandwidth are closely
related concepts, but they measure
different aspects of a network. While
throughput is the amount of data
traveling successfully across a network,
bandwidth is the maximum data volume
capacity of a network.
