Unit 7 Res 2
The overarching goal of the accommodation service industry is to provide customers with
comfort during their holidays. To achieve this, a considerable amount of resources is used
to meet guests' needs for heating, cooling, laundry, bathing, consumables, transportation,
food and beverages, and entertainment services. The consequences of consuming many
resources and generating large amounts of waste have negative impacts on the
environment, local communities, and the minimal profit or business outcomes of the
company. To minimize these impacts on the environment and society, the accommodation
service industry must find ways to change its business operations, with water, energy, and
waste being three of the most critical issues to address.
• Water: A precious resource and a basic human need. In the accommodation service, water
is required for activities such as dining service, sanitation and bathing, laundry, swimming
pools, maintenance, and garden upkeep. Water can be wasted through common forms like
leaks at faucets and pipes, using excessively high water pressure, choosing water-intensive
plant types, and using inefficient water-using devices.
• Waste: In the accommodation service business, waste is anything left over or no longer
needed for the facility or guests. Waste can include paper, cardboard, organic food waste,
plastic and other packaging materials, as well as metal, wood, and other materials.
Typically, waste is generated due to improper storage and usage, overestimating and
surplus planning (e.g., preparing too much food, printing too many flyers), excessive
packaging of products, and the use of single-use items without implementing reduction,
reuse, or recycling when possible.
• Energy: This is a core issue in the modern world related to modern appliances,
convenience, and is also a significant concern in the accommodation service industry,
where providing high standards of convenience for guests has been set as a goal to achieve.
However, in many cases, accommodation service businesses have wasted energy due to
poor maintenance of electrical equipment, inefficient purchases of energy-consuming
devices, use of ineffective heating and cooling systems, and wasting energy by keeping
electrical devices running even when not necessary.
o Financially: Not fully utilizing any form of product or service that is financially
wasteful... Water, energy, and goods all have value like money, so wasting them also means
throwing money away meaninglessly.
• Resources: Excessive consumption of water and energy will add pressure on the local
community's existing water and energy resources, places easily affected by specific
damages if the tourist destination is vulnerable to drought, water, and energy shortages.
Producing products but not using them or using only a part is a waste of resources in
production.
